Why you should read it: I love this story so much I almost don't know what to say in praise of it. Do I love it because it's fabulously written? Do I love it because it connects so beautifully to all that came before, joining the post-CoE near-future to the long history of Torchwood, which has become the history of a Jack, who do-what-he-might somehow belongs to Cardiff no matter how hard he runs, or what else he does? Or do I love it because it shows us a future that's… possible -- a future in which, Jack, bruised and broken and tired, must try at least, to make amends, a future in which Jack and Gwen can think of beginning again? For the children, because of the children, in spite of the children - all the children, the ones sacrificed and the ones who remain. Whether or not they succeed is immaterial; the beauty is in the attempt. It's bitter and true and uncompromising, but above all, to me, it felt hopeful. And real.
I love it for all these things, but most of all, because this story reminded me of why I love Torchwood itself, and though I can't quite put my finger on why or how, it showed me a way to love even the parts of canon I didn't like. I'm truly grateful.
