Summary: 1953. Jack is still Jack. Torchwood is not amused.
Why you should read it: This ain't your tame Jack. This Jack is angry and hurt. He's been waiting for the Doctor for a long time, and he's been forced to work for Torchwood during most of it. And this Torchwood ain't Jack's Torchwood. The things he's had to do for them have worn him down, taken him back - in spirit - to the con-man he was before he met the Doctor. He's in a bad place at a bad time, this Jack, and he's pushing at the boundaries set for him by Torchwood in any way that he can. For once, it might actually pay off.
This fic is a nice bit of backstory for Jack, for the way things could have happened. It's short, but it lets you imagine the behind the scenes machinations of the Torchwood hierarchy as they try to figure out how to keep their star player and all around problem child out of trouble. It also deals through implication with the very real situation that homosexuality was not accepted in general society during that time, and that sexual exhibitionism between two men in public had very real, often tragic, consequences.
