Summary: "I'm overreacting? Well, tell me, how are you supposed to react when in just twenty-four hours, you realise that the organization you work for is metaphorically killing you every single day, and it turns out the 'ghosts' everybody thought were harmless were, in fact, not really ghosts, but actually a whole of bunch of robotic aliens from an alternate dimension, intent on invading planet Earth with their flying pepperpot pals, who decided to turn all your friends and colleagues into mutant cyborgs - including your long-term girlfriend, who you just happened to cheat on the night before with some swishy American chap in a really nice coat? Go on, then. Tell me."
Why you should read it: Though jossed by series 2 and 'Fragments', I still find this to be believable and interesting backstory for Ianto Jones - just a small, replaceable part in the big machine, going about his routine, day in day out, working for Torchwood London, and it's actually not that exciting. Except for
Being so bloody terrified by the invading aliens who want to meet you, play with you, torture you, have sex with you, carve you up into equilateral triangles and then eat you with cheese fondue.
but other than that, his life is fine. Doing great, actually. All his life plans falling into place.
The feeling that the ideal life he painstakingly constructed has mutated into something darker.
What I've always loved most about Ianto is that he's so average. He's not a doctor, or a genius, or a great bleeding-heart humanitarian. He's not an immortal time-traveler or an alien. He's just a 25 year old man from a generation of directionless kids that had no idea what to do with themselves once they inexplicably became Adults. He's young and reckless and stupid, hiding behind an idealized model of what he thinks adulthood should be, whose great talent is the ability to touch his tongue to his nose-
-while he lives his irrelevant life in his broken, black-and-white world.
I love the tension between Ianto and Lisa - the fighting without fighting, the difficulties people go through in new relationships. And the guilt. A heavy motivator.
"We live in a broken world, Ianto. What else can we do but try to fix it?"
This story has so many wonderful bits in it I could quote the whole thing, every line.
tavven details the events in Ianto’s life leading up to ‘The Battle of Canary Wharf’ and what particularly drives him afterward.
"But when it comes down to your emotions - your basic, primal, hardcore feelings for the people you love - that logic seems to fly right out the window. And you're willing to do anything - anything - just to make things better."
