Why you should read it: I’ve come to appreciate AU’s in the same way that I love covers of songs done in remarkably different styles. Take for example The Scissor Sisters version of ‘Comfortably Numb’ - it’s so different it’s like a whole new song, or the trippy ‘Satisfaction’ done by Opium Jukebox. The song becomes its own, but the notes are recognizable, the melody is still there.
This fic covers the family dynamics in the Torchwood Team. No, really. Imagine Jack as the doting, but work-aholic dad; Gwen as his darling daughter and confidante; Toshiko as his overly-intelligent middle child; Owen as the spoiled ‘baby’ always causing mischief and getting into trouble; and Suzie as the eldest, rebellious teen. Then there’s Ianto, Jack’s new young partner, trying desperately to work within this family unit. It sounds cracktastic. However, the story really draws you in and the characters remain wholly themselves.
I would very much love a sequel that explores the background hinted at for Ianto’s youth and some resolution to Suzie’s situation, but as an examination of the team in a different setting, this fic is marvelous.
