Why you should read it: In 'To the Last Man' we were briefly introduced to Harriet Derbyshire and Gerald Carter, in this story, we are given another glimpse into their lives. We are reminded that Torchwood's story is part of (and yet, apart from) history as well as shaping the present and future. This story is skillfully grounded in the sensibility of that earlier era, when the Great War was winding to a close and the world was weary of conflict. Yet, Torchwood's war is never over and many of its casualties are unknown and unnamed. This subtly written story shows us how, for him - and for Harriet - their war ends.
