Summary: Somewhere between Countrycide and Captain Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones went from hardly knowing how to hold a gun to be willing and able to use it. How did he get there, and what did he have to sacrifice in the process?
Why you should read it: This is a long, plotty, episode-like, action fic with a strong bit of character development for Ianto as well as some excellent relationship development between Jack and Ianto. It takes Ianto from barely knowing how to use a gun, to being proficient and capable out in the field. I might even call it a Torchwood version of the "coming of age" story.
All of that description barely does it justice. This fic digs deep into Ianto's pysche, uncovering his deepest feelings, wants, and needs. Jack starts it all by asking Ianto a simple question, "What do you want?" But simple questions rarely have easy answers, and it takes Ianto awhile to realize the answer himself. When he finally does, he gets what he asked for, in spades. From the careful way Ianto presents himself to UNIT for further training, to the late night phone calls which gradually rebuild the broken relationship between Jack and Ianto, this fic is a rich read of fact and detail. The OCs are excellent support to the story overall, well drawn without being distracting, and the back story which is introduced for Ianto is heartbreakingly perfect. The inevitable conclusion to the conflict shows us just how far Ianto has come in such a short time, and how hard it is for him to have taken those final steps.
