Brief Review (no spoilers)
Rating: 4/5

"Thud!" is the latest Terry Pratchett novel, and is likely to be enjoyed by most Pratchett lovers. It features Commander Vimes, and the familiar Ankh-Morpork Watch characters, as they investigate a murder which could have explosive consequences for the city.

The book is very good, and the only disappointment ( Read more... )

I love the Troll quote, about being diamond. And the Dwarf one, but not as much.
Well, if the word was first, then how could there have been anything else? Heh.

I loved the idea of a vampire in the watch more than I liked the vampire.

Going Postal is just like The Truth but about the Postal service instead of newspaper office. The premise is, anyway. Though I liked Going Postal more than I'd expected from the plotline.

I've been wanting to write a review of Going Postal which I still have out of the library. But not got round to it, with everything else.

I'd say it's one of the middling ones. Enjoyable, but not great, and probably not one I'll re-read.

Be careful re inadvertent Thud spoilers.

It's good, but there's nothing that stands out. Though I don't understand why everyone I've read seems to talk about that Assyrian acting like a bad wolf.

Ah. Will do. Am trying to be already, though I guess my opinion could be seen as slightly spoilery.

What's all this about an Assyrian?

"The Assyrian came down like a wolf on the fold" is a line from a famous poem though.

It was the comment about not liking the vampire that made me think. Cos so far there is nothing to dislike about her, and I am intrigued and wanting to get to know a lot more about her.

I don't quite like the art bit. It is fun, but the codex bit's a tad too new ( ... )

Don't understand what you mean here.

I loved that it was Vimes racing home to read to young Sam

That might've been more fun if you hadn't known from the jacket blurb that that was it was going to be.

For me the idea of Vimes' dedication to his son was good, but it felt a bit wooden, maybe cos it was done so comically. So it remained as an idea rather than something emotional.

Had a thought afterwards, which is "I wonder if Terry Pratchett feels a bit like Vimes about his meteoric rise?"

I'll update the main post to put in a review later.

The Wossname codex is the Da Vinci code, really... and I think it's a bit too new for me to find it funny.

I suppose, but I think Vimes does feel a bit awkward about it all, too. He's not exactly young, and he's now rather vulnerable because of Young Sam. And he doesn't exactly know how to be a good father but he's going to do his damnedest to try. Or something. But, yes, it could be done perhaps a little better.

He feels more like Moist, that what he's doing is all smoke and mirrors, but people keep believing him. *nods firmly* He said as much in the reading group I was part of for a bit.

*grin*

I don't know anything about the Da Vinci code. I wasn't aware that you were supposed to find the Codex funny ( ... )
