This is the fanmix post for Wuthering Heights and Stormy Nights.

I was so amazingly lucky this year; I got THREE mixes and they're all completely different and completely wonderful.

#1 kthxrawr - A Story About a Girl

This mix, oh my god, it fits perfectly, I listened to the whole thing with the hugest fucking smile on my face.

tracklisting/notes:

1. Hanalei - Anza Ninety Three
[outcast at the back of the class back in nineteen ninety three //
subject to the names and war games of boyhood hierarchy]

2. Jason Mraz - Love For A Child
[and taking drugs and making love at far too young an age]

3. David Ford - Laughing Aloud
[eight weeks in the city // and you've never looked so pale]

4. Zolof the Rock & Roll Destroyer - Secret Circuits
[why are you so kind // when every time I think that my fuse is
going to blow?]
note: for some reason, the r is missing off the band name, and I
didn't catch until I uploaded. sorry!

5. Los Campesinos! - ...And We Exhale And Roll Our Eyes In Unison
[the last man standing is a girl // four sweaty boys with guitars
tell me nothing about my life]

6. dance hall crashers - cold shower
[I wish I could tell you what I want from you // I would if I knew]

7. Bloc Party - This Modern Love
[don't get offended // if I seem absent minded // I get tongue-tied]

8. Idlewild - In Remote, Pt.1/Scottish Fiction
[and even if the breath between us smells of alcohol // call it
confusion in the best way possible]

9. Kids In Glass Houses - Saturday
[and now I feel a little cheap, yeah // but I won't admit defeat
till // saturday, saturday, saturday // and it's not one of my better
days]

10. Jack Off Jill - I Touch Myself
[I don't want anybody else // when I think about you I touch myself]

11. Farewell - war
[I wanna show you all the things I promised // I wanna give away
the things I won't miss // I wanna find a decent way to tell you // I
need to spend some time alone]

12. Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly - Call Me Ishmael
[in fact it's felt like an age since I last sat down or // saw a
town that wasn't linked by shows]

promise I'll always // always be there ]

# 2 by defreule - fanmix [NEW WORKING LINK]

Not only did she make this incredibly mix, she also wrote me the most amazing notes to go along with it. Read them. This mix is full of songs that I didn't know before, that I feel richer for knowing now. And how much do I love that she only used female artists? THIS MUCH.

Notes!

After I read Stormy Nights and Wuthering Heights, I knew one thing for sure: I wanted to make a playlist with only female voices. The Bry in this story is such a strong woman, I wanted the playlist to showcase the voices of strong women in pop- and rock-music.

So, I started thinking up songs that would fit with the story. Then I started tripping myself up. The song ‘Supergirl’ has some awesome lyrics: ‘hey, it’s okay/I got lost on my way/but I’m a supergirl/ and supergirls don’t cry’. It’s sung by a guy though. So is the Dutch song ‘Omarm me’ (Embrace me). And so are a lot of other songs that would have fit perfectly with the story. The realization that it was surprisingly difficult to think of songs by female artists unsettled me. And it made me kind of sad. I wasn’t even thinking of all-girl bands here, just female voices! How odd, to think that rock-music really is a male space! In our corner of the internet, full of smart, eloquent women, it’s so easy to forget that there are still places where it’s hard for a female voice to get heard!

I decided to stick with the plan though, and I actually ended up with a list that was twice as long as the max. These 18 songs made it on the final playlist. Enjoy!

This is where I start blattering on about the reasons for my choices. I always like to read why someone chose a song, so I decided to tell you about my choices. Feel free to skip over this, though :-)

1 Stupid Girl - Garbage
taking a pregnacy test always makes me feel stupid.

2 Just A Girl - No Doubt
Seemed to fit the theme. Being a girl changes nothing, except for how it changes everything.

3 Wonderwoman - Leaf
It’s a truth universally acknowledged, that teenagers have the most boring lives, in like, ever!

4 I would stay - Krezip
krezip is a Dutch band, with big sis Jacqueline as singer and playing the piano, and little sis Anne on guitar. They are the best Dutch band of the last 10 years imho. (If you want to hear more of their music, let me know and I’ll send you some) We don’t want to grow up, we just do. Bry leaving home felt like this song to me.

5 That's Not My Name - The Ting Tings
When Bry first joined the tour, I bet she felt like this a lot! All: ‘Hi there, my name is not darling and my eyes are up here!’

6 Je Suis Comme Je Suis - Wende Snijders
I am as I am…

7 Sour times - Portishead
I love this song. I thought it fit well with Bry’s downwards spiral.

8 Weak As I Am - Skunk Anansie
ibid

9 The Fear - Lilly Allen
Lily Allen usually makes me itch, but I do like this song. It seems to capture that uncomfortable feeling of ‘Is this all? Am I doing this ‘life’-thing right?’

- 9a: this is where Fergie’s Big girls don’t cry was on all versions of this playlist except for the final one. I felt like that song needed to be on the list, because it’s in the story. But after listening to the whole playlist one last time, I decided I still didn’t like the song. As I was the second person to claim the story, I’m going to assume the other fanmixer has included it in her playlist :-)

10 Refugee - Oi Va Voi
This feels an awful lot like cheating, because Oi va Voi also has a male singer. This song is sung by their female singer though, so I decided it counts. For reasons that don’t need exploring at this juncture, to me this song feels like sex. (The whole cd is awesome for seduction, by the way. Title: Laughter through tears)

11 Queen Of Apology - The Sounds
My one (semi)bandom song! I couldn’t talk about female voice in rock-music, and leave Maja out!

12 All The Things She Said - t.A.T.u
Because the story is about Bob, as much as it’s about Bry. Fake-lesbian Russian techno-pop has never hurt anyone, has it?

13 This is the life - Amy MacDonald
This song always makes me smile. To me, this is a song about friends and friendship. The video is just a bunch of twentysomethings out on the town.

14 Nobodys Wife - Anouk
Dutch singer. The video for this song is pretty awesome

15 Pumpkin Soup - Kate Nash
I just want your kiss, boy… Plus: Kate Nash has really funny songs, and I like her voice.

16 Forca - Nelly Furtado
Life is good! Forca!

17 Benen I Kors - Lisa Ekdahl
Swedish folk-singer. The song is really sweet: /I don’t want to stress you out/I don’t want to pressure you/but, I want to say loud and clear/what I think is wonderful and/you’re the most beautiful thing I know. (very shoddy translation, my Swedish is rusty)

-17a Wuthering Heights - Kate Bush
This is where in all version but this one, this song was. I mostly put it in for the title, but I decided to take it out at the last moment. I might regret that later on, though.

Bonus song!
18 Mensch durf te leven - Wende Snijders
Mensch, dare to live! This song actually is cheating, because there already is a song by Wende Snijders on this list. I included it anyway, because a) Wende is awesome and 2) this is an awesome song. QED.

# 3 by shanalle - Accident Prone

This mix absolutely screams Bry to me and I love it so much.

Three amazing mixes here folks, comment and tell the mixers how completely great they are!
