I have never heard anything about tattoos interfering with MRIs. Thousands of people get MRIed everyday and I've only heard of jewellery interfering with MRIs. If it is a significant health concern, I'm sure it's included on the consent form (ie. these are the risks) to be signed before getting a MRI. Also, many people have metal fillings, and they don't make you take those out for MRIs (although I'm not sure what they do about that).
I did a Googe search and came up with some info:
http://tattoo.about.com/cs/tatfaq/a/mri_scan.htm - Tattoos within the last 20 years is OK.
http://www.coolnurse.com/tattoo_fda.htm - Interferes with MRIs of eyes.
http://www.medinfosource.com/expert/exp4110303b.html - Creates poor images.
All of them agree that:
1. It's rare.
2. There's minor health consequences to person (heat, stinging, swelling).
3. Inform the doctor and/or technician that you have a tattoo in the area being MRIed if concerned.
