Tonight some friends and I went and saw
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (trailers) based on the
graphic novel series and.... OH MY GOD.I was completely unprepared for what I went to watch.
I had seen the trailer and thought "Ah, some normal, yet awkward guy falls for a girl who is not just out of his league, but has seven evil exes and he either acquires or just outright has some super powers to fight other super-powered folks... Eventually he'll win against them, or something, and he gets the girl." right? Well, it's something like that. Kinda like how you can say "Today I'm going to get up, some stuff will happen and the day will end" on the awesomest day EVER!
So, how do I begin to describe this movie? This movie is... for anyone who grew up with video games in the 80s and 90s (not just NES type games, but played in the video arcade), absurd special effects, and anime too. It reminded me of the anime
Fooly Cooly in a lot of ways.
Basically, if you're into retro-video games, or grew up on 8-bit games as a kid, you'll probably laugh your ass off.
But if you can't hum the original 8-bit version of Legend of Zelda, never threw coins into a Mortal Combat arcade machine, or have a hard time following a scene when it's fast-cut and full of very flashy special effects, this movie probably isn't for you.
