While shopping around the other day, I walked into a Sprint store to check out what might be available for cell phones.
Well, I didn't want to change my plan, so I looked at what they had... and, well, I was underwhelmed. Then I asked "Okay, well, if I want to text, what do you have then?" So after showing me a few other options, I was shown the
Sanyo "Incogneto". It looked good enough to me, and the keyboard felt good. It had a media player, 2MP camera and groovy front-cover interface. After mulling it over, I figured "why not?" However, I had one really big concern--"How's the reception?"
Well, it turns out I had the right to be concerned. I've had this theory for years that as cell phones have developed, its function as a "telephone" has been less and less important. First it was color displays, then games, then cameras, then video, then web browsing, then music playing, then... well, everything else under the sun. Meanwhile the signal strength has been reduced more and more.
I started my cell phone history with a
Motorola i60c in 2002. It was a good, if simple, clamshell phone. It had great signal. I then I switched to a
Motorola i850 because I wanted a camera phone. I lost some signal strength, but it hasn't been a bad phone. So, now I have the
Sanyo "Incogneto" in my hand ... I'm going to give it until the 1st, just in case it's a time to adjust to the phone, but seriously... I get crappy reception in the basement. At least I could walk to my window if my reception was a bit crackly, but... I can't even get full words on my phone when I'm standing next to the window. Sure, I can receive texts, but... really? I can't get phone calls? It's the same towers! This is the first phone I've had with an internal antenna and I am NOT impressed. Even upstairs in my house I get ONE BAR of signal! Also, the earpiece on the phone... is high-pitched and squaky. Other cons on the phone are having to open the phone and go through a menu to get to the camera. When answering or hanging up on a call, I have to unlock the keypad. Also, no more 2-way walkie-talkie feature.
However... the speaker on this thing is great and comes with a 1GB mini memory card which is great and the qwerty keypad is easy to use with my fingers.
However, I'm not greatly impressed with it overall, and unless something amazing happens, I'll likely be trying to go back to my old phone and such... and no texting.
