10 Big Myths about Copyright

Dec 03, 2009 10:08

While FA is down... now may be a good time to review some interesting myths about copyrights...

I found an interesting article here: http://www.templetons.com/brad/copymyths.html

Here's a summary of a few from the article:

•You don't NEED a notice of copyright for something to be copywritten. There is a proper way of copyrighting which could strengthen your case if it was brought to court, but otherwise, it's almost universally unnecessary now.

•It is still a violation of copyright laws, even if you don't charge for it. (though, in the US, music seems to have some leeway given, I would assume because of performances and not for file sharing or sampling.)

•Unless a creator explicitly says "I grant this to the public domain", it's not "public domain" property.

•Fair use is more about the right to use a work for commentary, than to be allowed to use it for your own creative means.

Maybe later tonight I'll actually sit down and do a proper blog. Oh, well. Back to work!
