Thanksgiving

We ran away. We packed our truck and ran away. We're at Estes Park. Just got back from roller skating. Until yesterday, I hadn't skated in 27 years and about 70 pounds. For Tom, it was closer to 33 years. The Creature skated for the first time last night. Of course, by tonight he was a pro. Walked back to the hotel in a bit of a wind--21 degrees, wind in the low 20 mph, gusts in the mid-30s.

Yesterday, we went up to Bear Lake. It was so amazingly cold! I was wearing long johns, flannel-lined ski pants, tank top, t-neck, t-neck sweater, fleece jacket, and my abominable blueberry coat (twelve-year old Gortex-down parka), and my new ski gloves. And my knit hat. I thought my fingers and nose were going to freeze, and we were only out for maybe twenty minutes. Got awesome pics, but it turns out my laptop can't take my camera's card.

Then we drove back into town (after seeing an alluvial fan) and the only place we could find to eat Thanksgiving dinner was a bar. I had a Reuben. It was fantastic. Tenderest corn beef I've ever had.

Last Thursday, I considered all of our Thanksgiving options, turned to Tom, and said, "Let's go to the YMCA of the Rockies. You're always trying to get us there. We can stay in a room and eat at the dining hall and not worry about a thing." Friday I made the reservations, and we got here last night. There's the aforementioned roller skating, a swimming pool, basketball, crafts, nature walks and classes, games for the kids, bingo...and all the extra activities have been free, so far. Tomorrow there's a Christmas parade down the main drag of Estes Park (the town). I think last night there was only one other room filled in our three-story hotel. Tonight, there's about eight.

We leave Saturday so we can make church. Our pastor only has two Sundays left. We're going to miss him. And his daughter, the baby-sitter.

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving spent with the people you wanted to be with. And that you don't get frostbite on your ears.
