I've seen varied effects of berries, but I can't pin them down with names. What's it do?

Kind of like shrooms. The Persim causes hallucinations and nausea. See, that's already amusing. But then we have to take Boss' normal temper into account. That plus seeing things might not end well for anyone.

That's where the Chesto berry comes into play. It has sedative properties and makes someone highly relaxed, and if too much is used it can knock a person out. Combine the two in a good balance and we get entertainment to catch on camera.

I saw someone tripped on Persim berries before, then. Fun, but fucking exasperating on the long run, the guy couldn't calm his ass down it was kinda pathetic. [That was Julie Katou, who had also been convinced he was talking to a shark at the time.]
