here personality:
On the outside, Kanji appears to be a tough guy. He is often accused of bullying and gang activity. It upsets him to be accused of this suspicious behavior, so with the help of the protagonist, he decides to change himself from the inside out.
Kanji assumes a hard exterior to cover up for his insecurities. The series suggests a struggle with his sexuality. This, however, is resolved once he acquires his Persona and maxes his Social Link.
Despite his tough act, Kanji has a soft spot for cute things. Most importantly, he has the ability to make elaborate dolls. He sews a rabbit for a young boy, saying that he identifies with the child who lost his own doll due to bullying. He also befriends the protagonist's young cousin, Nanako, promising that he will teach her how to sew.
Kanji has trouble making friends. The protagonist is the first person he becomes close to, according to Kanji's mother. She discloses that because of his odd behavior in childhood (i.e. preferring stereotypically feminine activities over masculine ones) that neither girls nor boys would accept him.
Before Kanij's father passed away, he told Kanji that before he can become a man, he has to become strong. Kanji also cares deeply for his mother. These two things combined inspired him to change his looks and his attitude. He wants to live up to his father's words and also protect his mother. There was a biker gang he fought off so that his mother could sleep at night, so he shut them up. The town then started labeling him as a thug for getting mixed up in gang activity. He decides to keep this image because if he doesn't, people will go back to calling him queer and making fun of his attraction to “girly” things.
Kanji's reaction to the way Yosuke treats him on the camping trip shows just how sensitive he really is. Yosuke pushes his own insecurities onto Kanji, and Kanji is so desperate to prove himself that he is willing to risk expulsion by sneaking into the girls' tent. He tries to prove himself again at the hot Amagi Inn during the hot springs event by breaking into the girls' room. Even though he faced himself and accepted his shadow, the desire to prove himself is still remarkably strong.
A misconception about Kanji is that he is gay. While there is no concrete evidence defining his sexual preference in the game, he obviously struggles with identity issues related to his gender. The only evidence pointing towards Kanji's orientation is his interactions with Naoto, a girl whom, at the time of their meeting, presents herself as a male to Kanji. This goes on to suggest that Kanji may be bisexual, or rather, indifferent about his preferences because he is interested in Naoto as either a male or a female.
One of the game's major flaws is that it tries to connect sexual identity with sexual orientation, however, the two have little to no direct correlation. Although Kanji's shadow hides out in a bathhouse, a cultural symbol for homosexuality, his shadow displays a hatred for girls in particular because they make fun of him for liking things such as painting and sewing. They call him a queer because of his preferences in activities, not his preferences in people.
Kanji develops a strong sense of justice. At first, he is eager to throw Namatame into the TV, but the protagonist is able to convince him to wait and he begins to understand the reasoning behind his decision, that no good will come out of acting rashly. He agrees that Adachi must face his punishment in prison, because he understands that is how the world works.
Overall, Kanji is a strong willed individual who can be rash and headstrong at times. He comes off as intimidating to others, but is kind to and cares deeply about protecting his family and friends. Through his interaction with the protagonist and the rest of the investigation team, he learns that being strong doesn't necessarily mean being manly.
abilities:
Kanji is a Persona user of the lightning element. A persona is a physical manifestation of a person's inner thoughts and feelings, and is able to be called upon during battle. This power is technically reserved for inside the TV world only, however, for the sake of this universe, that may be ignored. He is also a skilled physical fighter. He uses large, heavy objects such as desks and folding chairs in combat.
Kanji is a gifted tailor. He makes dolls from scratch and is able to fix things, such as torn fabric.

samples.
sample journal entry:
[ kanji is fumbling around with what appears to be a small computer. he arbitrarily presses a button, and a shaky voice can be heard over the network. ]
Wh-what the hell's going on here? And what's this thing for?
[ he turns and presses his nose up against the glass while looking out the window, wide-eyed at the unfamiliar scenery. his eyes catch a sudden movement just beyond the trees that line the path as a
wallie treks on by. ]
Huh? This some kind of animal? Never seen one like this before. If only this damn thing could connect to the Internet... Sure is cute, though.
[ however strange, its many layers of fur look soft to the touch. he barely has time to get a good look at it, though, as the caravan continues to move forward and kanji is forced back to reality. ]
This place sure as hell ain't Inaba.
third-person sample:
Kanji sits on a wooden bench in the main hall. A small crowd is gathered around as he weaves an intricate pattern into the backside of the doll on his knee. Compliments are mumbled all around, but Kanji hears nothing as he is engrossed in his work.
“Damn kids, if you weren't so careless, stuff like this wouldn't happen.”
A young girl kneels on the floor by Kanji's feet, eyes wide with wonder as she watches him sew. Word spreads fast in cramped conditions like these. When her favorite doll fell off the caravan to be crushed under the ogre's foot, she knew exactly who to go to for help, much to Kanji's embarrassment. He complains throughout his demonstration, but is a little mournful on the inside. What was the doll like, before it met its gruesome fate? What kind of personality did the little critter hold inside its worn-out body? He can only imagine, though, as he tries to recreate the character to the best of his ability.
He sews the last few stitches on the doll and holds it up for all to see, carefully examining his handiwork. It's a rabbit with denim overalls and a yellow bandana around its neck. He smiles contentedly, and hands it to the little girl, patting her on the head.
“There you go, kid. If you lose this one, I ain't makin' you another, ya hear?”
