okay... here are the Shotgun Rules i have adopted for my car, complements of will mitchell (
wwwwwiiiiilllll), sort of edited by me.
Section I - General Rules
1) The first person to yell "shotgun" gets to ride in the front seat.
2) The call must be loud enough to be heard by at least one witness.
3) Early calls are strictly prohibited. All calls must be made outside while the car is in plain sight. under no circumstances may a person call shotgun inside a building. For simplicity's sake, a garage is considered to be outside. Parking structures and detatched garages are always considered as being outdoors, even if they are underground.
4) A shotgun call is only valid for one way of a trip. Shotgun can never be called while inside a vehicle or still technically on the way to the first location. For example, one cannot get out of the car and call shotgun for the return journey.
5) One is allowed to ride shotgun as many times as he can call it, but for himself only. No one can call shotgun for his/her slow or mentally handicapped friend.
6) Members of the male gender are given shotgun priotity. If there is only one male occupant of the car, he is automatically awarded shotgun privileges for the entire trip, unless he declines. If there are multiple male occupants, they must adhere to the Rules For Shotgun to determine which of them is awarded the privilege. If one of the male occupants in competition happens to be the significant other of the driver, he is automatically given shotgun.
7) The driver has the final say in all disputes, assuming that they are the owner of the vehicle. If not, they will still have final say in disputs as long as the owner is not present. If the owner is present, they will have final say.
8) The driver and/or owner reserves the right to remove or suspend shotgun privledges from one or more persons.
Section II - Special Cases
1) In the instance that the normal driver of the vehicle is unable to perform their duties as driver, he/she is automatically given shotgun.
2) In the instance that the person who owns the car is not driving, he/she is automatically given shotgun, unless he/she declines.
3) In the instance that a passenger becomes ill during the trip, he/she is automatically given shotgun, to make appropriate use of the window.
4) In the instance that only one person knows how to get to the destination and this person is not the driver, they become the Designated Navigator of the group and automatically get shotgun, unless they decline.
Section III - Amendments
Amendment I: Eviction
If the vehicle is forced to stop as a result of a serious infraction of the shotgunner, the shotgunner must relenquish his/her seat, if the driver wishes.
Amendment II: Nose Goes
If two people tie for shotgun, the first person to put his/her right index finger on his/her nose is awarded shotgun. If they both do this at the same time, an immediate race to the car is required.
Amendment III: Five Minute Rule
This rule, which originated in Massachusetts, states that if the passenger riding shotgun leaves the car (i.e. getting something from a convenient store), he/she is given five minutes to return to the car and still retain shotgun privileges. Once the time is up, the remaining passengers will follow standard procedure to claim shotgun.
Amendment IV: Duel
In such a case where any present shotgun rules still cause confusion between two individuals, they may duel for the honor of Shotgun. This duel takes the form of one (and only one) round of traditional "Paper, Rock, Scissors."
Amendment V: Chinese Sneak Attack
In the event that someone manages to touch the passenger side door handle and/or is sitting in the passenger seat before anyone has called shotgun, he/she is awarded full shotgun privileges. However, this amendment does not apply to someone who ran to the car in order to do so
Amendment VI: International Travel
When crossing the border into another country, all shotgun claims are void. Passengers will follow standard procedure to claim shotgun, and the driver must pull over at the next reasonable spot for seat changes.
Amendment VII: Context
A passenger may only recieve shotgun if their call was in context of calling shotgun. For instance, no one would recieve shotgun for saying, "Did anyone call shotgun?"
Amendment VIII: Shotgun Suicide
If the shotgun caller attempts to open the car door as it is being unlocked (thus causing it to stay locked), he/she forfeits shotgun privileges, and a new round of calling must take place.
Amendment IX: Multiple Calls
This rule takes place if two or more groups are meeting at the car, and each group has a member who has already called shotgun. If who called first cannot be decided, the dispute is settled with "Rock, Paper, Scissors."
Amendment X: The Barefoot rule
Sometimes, in an effort to see the car first, some people will grab their shoes, run outside, and call shotgun without putting their shoes on. This is not valid. you must have shoes on (if you plan to wear any) before calling shotgun.
Amendment XI: Re-entry
If you call shotgun and go back inside a building, your call is void.
too funny not to post...and lauren, marissa, and blaire...these apply to you especially.
