I've had my hair over 60 different colors or combinations of colors. I've gone from bright blue to completely white with three bleaches in one evening. Bleach has never hurt my head.
I've also dyed a LOT of other peoples' hair, and even the most sensitive-scalped, virgin-haired person said that it just felt like ants crawling around on their head - not painful at all.
Bleach really shouldn't hurt your head, or you're doing it wrong. :\
People have different reactions to different chemicals - what's fine for you may not be fine for others.
And regardless of whether it hurts or not, the fact is that bleach is a serious skin irritant and it's good to minimize contact with it as much as possible, even if you don't "hurt" from it. (For example, there are people who have no reaction to lavender oil and think it's just fine to use on skin, but it is a skin irritant and a photosensitizer, and certain components of lavender, specifically linalool, can cause skin-cell death when topically applied, whether you feel pain/irritation or not.)
Oh, no, I'm aware of that. :) I've studied the chemical nature of bleach and how it affects skin and stuff. I was just pointing out that bleach really shouldn't hurt (at the very least, for the reasons you've mentioned: it hurting means it's on your skin, which technically it really shouldn't be).
What would be the best way to keep it off the skin, oiling the scalp beforehand? Or just not going all the way down to the roots? Just wondering, 'cause even weaksauce semi-permanent stuff has made my head feel like it was on fire. XD (Not surprisingly my hair hasn't changed color more than a few times in my lifetime. XD)
Generally, you would want to section off the hair, apply bleach to everything but the roots (the first one or two inches of your hair), wait a few minutes, then use a bleach brush to caaaarefully apply bleach to the roots, getting as little as possible on your scalp. You wouldn't want to oil your scalp, as oil would get on the hair as well, blocking the bleach. You can oil your hairline, though.
Additionally, you could also use a lower volume of bleach. Many bleaching kits use 40 volume bleach, which is way strong. I recommend 20 volume if you're not experienced with it (or if you've found that higher volumes burn your scalp), with 30 volume MAX if you're really familiar with bleach. I've been dyeing my hair since I was 14, and I always use 30 volume.
Thanks! This is all good to know. *thumbs up* I probably still wouldn't do this often (bleach tends to make my hair really spongy/crackly) but having a game plan is always good for the next time I want to try it out. I'll definitely be starting with 20 volume, I can assure you. *rofl*
Your hair getting fried is probably because you were using a high volume of bleach (I'm guessing 40). My advice would be NOT to wash your hair for a day or two prior to the bleaching (to let the protective oils build up; I know that sounds contradictory to what I said before, but different oils let bleach through differently), condition it REALLY well at least twice as you're rinsing it out, and then, if you can find them, put in some hot oil treatments. I like Got2B's "Hottie" oil treatments. Don't know if they sell those wherever you're from, but they're AMAZING (and cheap).
If 20 volume still irritates you, try 10. I've never used it, since I've never needed to, but it might help. You may just have to keep it in for, like, forever, to get it to work.
orly??
(PS: Hair bleach isn't painful.)

Good luck with it, if you attempt it again. :)
