Chapter Nine
James
I found Jack down in the firing range, practising with his Webley pistol. Instead of shooting at the targets that were placed in the middle of the cardboard cut out, he was shooting the heads. I noticed the various holes and bullets stuck in the cardboard. His coat was lying upon a chair which was next to the table with the various guns lying across it. When I first learnt how to use a gun, it had been a very nervous situation.
“Ah, now they’re dead,” Jack said with a laugh before turning around, “Martha told me that you went for a walk.”
“Yes, I had to clear my head,” I replied rubbing the back of my neck.
“Are you ok?” Jack asked placing the Webley back into his holster. I shrugged and stared down at the ground.
“Just tired I guess, didn’t get much sleep,” I replied while still staring at the ground, “Woke up to find Emmett naked in my kitchen.”
“Really, well that happened to me once,” Jack replied with a smile.
“Did he offer to make you breakfast?” I asked with interest.
“No, just a blow job!”
“I thought Emmett and you weren’t lovers?”
Jack laughed, “Unless Emmett has a tentacle with a sucker on the end, I’m afraid we are talking about completely different people.”
I nodded and went back to staring at the ground, “Sorry I....” I began but slightly faltered.
“Doesn’t matter, did Emmett keep you up then?” He asked in which I gave him a look, “I meant with the dreams.”
“Yes he did, how did you.....?”
“Many pilots suffered from bad dreams back in the day,” He explained rather solemnly, “Emmett Kingston was one of them.”
“Ok, well it was a mixture of his dreams and mine that kept me awake,” I replied with a shrug, “How did you two meet?”
“He saved my life once in a bar, can’t really go into the details,” He replied putting a hand on my shoulder, “I will tell you though that he’s the only solder who knows about my immortality.”
“Really? Why did you tell him?” I asked rather surprised.
“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”
I nodded and rubbed the back of my neck again, “I bumped into him down at the shopping plaza, and it seems he wants to get to know me better.”
“That’s good, I mean at the moment he probably wants to be friends,” Jack tried to assure me.
“Yes probably but I’m really uncomfortable about it.” I told him with an anxious smile, “I sort of openly flirted with him last night.”
“That’s normal, I was the same when I met him,” Jack assured me, “He is a very handsome man.”
“I know but I have never done that before,” I confessed. “With another man,” I added which made Jack look at me.
“What about me?” Jack asked rather hurt.
“That’s different, you make it easy to flirt,” I replied looking at him, “You always make the first remark and I flirt back to make you happy.”
“Fair enough,” Jack agreed with a smile. “So what’s the problem?”
I sighed, “Emmett comes from an era when homosexuality is crime.”
“What’s the real problem?” Jack asked which made me raise an eyebrow before I finally sighed.
“I’ve never been entirely comfortable with my bisexuality.”
Martha
“Hi, Martha wasn’t it?” a voice asked and I looked up to see Emmett standing at the other side of the table. I was still sitting on the couch with a fresh cup of coffee.
I nodded, “Yes, that’s right,” I replied with a smile.
“Might if I sit down?” He asked.
“Not at all,” I replied with a nod and he sat down on the couch a little way from me. He sat back and sighed while running a hand through his hair. I could help but look him over as he was a very handsome man, dressed in a blue shirt and black trousers.
“Been shopping with Ianto,” He said making conversation, “I ended up getting a lot of clothes, shoes and a record player.”
“Nice, a record player how very...”
“Old fashioned I know,” He finished with a smile, “I tried out an iPod but it wasn’t the same, James told me that he might have some records of Glenn Miller.”
“He does, though doesn’t play them,” I told him. “He normally just plays music on his computer or listens to his MP-3 player, iPod just a brand.”
“I guessed that since Ianto pointed out different types of those players,” Emmett said with a smile, “I think I’ve scared James.”
“What makes you say that?” I asked.
“I told him that I wanted to know more about him,” He replied with a sigh, “He interests me and when I first saw him I felt....” He added before shutting his mouth.
“It’s alright if you are attracted to him,” I assured him.
“James told me that we didn’t need to hide anymore but I’m not sure if I believe him,” Emmett explained getting quite solemn, “I had to watch men hide away, we didn’t sit too close in pubs and couldn’t show public affection, how can I be so sure?”
“You should ask Jack,” I advised him, “He’s been here longer than we have.”
“Where is he?”
“Firing range I think,” I replied with a smile. “It’s just past the medical bay.”
“Thanks,” He said before leaving me alone on the couch.
