Chapter Twenty Six

James

Dr Worthington put the phone down and looked back at me. While he had been talking to Jack I had my head down playing with my finger nails. I had drowned out most of the conversation and even controlled reading his mind. All that time his thoughts had stayed out of my head like I didn’t want to know what he was thinking while talking to Jack. I even felt relieved that I had finally told Jack about the bipolar.

“May I ask what I was thinking through out the phone call?” Dr Worthington asked snapping me from my thoughts.

“Um... Jack’s a jerk?” I answered quite innocently. Dr Worthington gave a small smile.

“See, you’re controlling it already,” Dr Worthington said quite cheerily, “I think we will just have to concentrate on the Bipolar.” He added before looking down at the file in front of him.

I watched Dr Worthington closely as he read the file. In there was the story of my life, of all the breakdowns, relationship breakups, nightmares, lack of sleep and happy moments that I had for the last eight years, since my diagnosis at nineteen years old. I was now twenty seven and lived alone. Some things never changed. Though there was the lie to Captain Jack Harkness which was now nagging at me.

“Dr Worthington, this morning I had a dream which disturbed me.” I blurted which made him look up at me, “I sort of lied to Jack that I didn’t remember it.”

“Ah now why did you lie to him?”

I sighed, “Well I could hear his thoughts clearly in my head.”

“Yes of course, still it doesn’t explain why....”

“Dr Worthington, Jack is a very nice man, flirts with us, plays the hero but I’m still angry at him for suspending me.” I replied rather angrily.

“Ah I see, well for now lets leave Jack out of this.” Dr Worthington said learning over on the desk. “Just explain to me what the dream was about.”

“Alright well after a sort of dreamless night I found myself this morning in a dark room tied to a chair with a light bulb hanging over head. There was this man who appeared in front of me, he didn’t tell me his name and I really can’t remember what he looked like....” I began but started to falter a little.

“At the moment it doesn’t matter but what did you talk about?” Dr Worthington asked, prompting me to go on.

“He made me scream in agony as he read my mind. He never spoke because he just wanted my thoughts. Well that was until Jack appeared telling me that that everything was alright. He must have heard me thrashing about. Well I asked the man who Jack was but he wouldn’t tell me. Said that it didn’t matter, then the next thing I know I told the man I wanted to help the others find the asylum.” I finished putting my head down.

“Interesting,” Dr Worthington said before getting out of his seat. He walked around and knelt down beside me. “And you woke up to find someone’s thoughts in your mind?”

“Yes Martha’s while she was cooking eggs on toast.” I replied with a smile. “She’s just a friend by the way, engaged to a Doctor.”

“Just as I suspected, the man in the dream unlocked the mass in your brain, causing the telepathy to fully develop.” Dr Worthington said with a smile, “Without realising it.”

“Excuse me?” I asked, my eyes staring into his.

“Time’s up I’m afraid,” Dr Worthington replied standing up again, “Same time next week?”
