Chapter three
I looked at Jack and nodded. It was starting to get interesting especially with the writing on the wall though I still wanted to go through the security footage. At the moment I felt uncomfortable as our heads were quite close, like Jack was going to lean in and kiss my lips. I didn’t want to think about it but the thought was there, clear as day. Right now it wasn’t going to shift.
“What are you thinking about James Elton?” Jack asked, leaning in closer. I could smell the fifty first century pheromones lingering on his skin.
“Nothing, Jack.” I replied looking back at the writing on the wall. “Let’s see what they meant by the asylum.”
“Ianto might be able to tell us, he’s researching the history of this place.” Jack explained before I heard him leave the room. I stood there confused as to what had happened a few minutes before when I had thought Jack was going to kiss me.
In the past all of my relationships had ended badly because of my habits and constant problems. Depression, nightmares and the darkness always followed me everywhere and I always had to explain to them that I wasn’t a perfect man. For some reason all the women I ever went out with wanted me to be perfect or were expecting me to change. The men on the other hand I didn’t have to worry about as the relationship stopped at a one night stand.
“So you have writing on your wall as well.” Gwen’s voice seemed to sing as I turned around to see her standing behind me.
“Yep, does it have the same message?” I asked with a smile.
“Yes, if ‘I need to find the asylum’ is what you were referring to?” Gwen answered walking up to my side.
I nodded and gazed up at Gwen, at how her brown hair sat at her shoulders and how she was asserting herself. She was second in command at Torchwood and had in the past proved herself to be a leader. Secretly I thought that she once been Jack’s favourite before Owen Harper and Toshiko Sato’s deaths. Now everyone was treated like they were all his favourites.
“James, I wanted to assure you that I’m now ok with you going to London. Yesterday’s argument wasn’t about that.” Gwen said, still looking at the writing on the wall.
“Then what was it about?” I asked a look of concern on my face.
“Oh it doesn’t matter, just random stuff.” She replied with a smile. “Oh Rhys wanted me to ask you if you fancied coming over for dinner tomorrow night?”
“Oh sounds great, is the Aussie vs. Wales rugby match on tomorrow night?”
“Yeah,” She replied with a laugh.
I smiled, “Tell him that I will be honoured to see Wales lose.”
Gwen laughed, “I will do that though he won’t be impressed.”
It was my turn to laugh. Rhys was a great mate and a wonderful husband to Gwen. He was the only man in Cardiff I could watch Rugby with as Jack had never seen a rugby match in his life and Ianto wasn’t really interested. Back in London before I had moved to the Cardiff, watching matches in pubs was fun especially when the English played us. Five Aussies in one corner, five hundred English men in the other, chanting insults at each other until the end of the match when the English were the ones celebrating their victory. I still had horrible memories of the 2004 world cup final.
Suddenly I heard a scream from outside and Gwen and I raced out to find one of the patients trying to grab something off Martha. Two nurses had rushed to her aid and were trying to pull him back. He was a bit scruffy looking with black hair and wearing an olive green dressing gown. I was also that he had stubble on his chin.
“You are in grave danger!” He shouted before he finally was finally dragged off by the nurses. Though he managed to get them off him and dust himself down. I saw Martha put the object into her pocket.
“Are you alright?” I asked as I walked up to her. She was now up against the wall, a little shaken.
“Yeah, though I don’t know what his problem was.” She answered pointing to the man who stood behind me.
“I’m sorry but you really are in grave danger.” He said again before one of the nurses grabbed his arm but he shook her off. He looked at me with his hazel green eyes.
“I can see the darkness in your eyes, you’re a troubled soul, please watch out for the man who escapes death.” He told me before walking away with one of the nurses. “He scared me with his coat earlier.” He added loudly before Jack walked up.
“What happened?” He asked as he watched the man being led back to his room.
“One of the patients grabbed me that’s all.” Martha replied with a smile.
“Yeah, the nurses managed to get him off.” I added looking at Jack and Gwen. Jack nodded and walked off towards the entrance with Gwen behind him.
“So should we take him seriously?” Martha asked before entwining her hand into mine and we walked towards the entrance.
“I don’t know but may I ask what you found?” I asked squeezing her hand.
“You wouldn’t believe it if I told you.” She replied.
“Try me.” I told her.
“You’re unbelievable James Elton.” She said with a smile.
“Thanks, though I have been called worst.” I replied as we walked towards the blue Ford Focus.
