I've decided to be convinced that it's actually Peter Wimsey, especially given the fancy dress in Murder Must Advertise. :-)

Lord Peter Wimsey was the detective in a mystery series from the 1930s. There've actually been a few TW/Wimsey crossovers that people have done.
