THE YOUNG AMERICANS (1993)

Directed by Danny Cannon
Written by Danny Cannon and David Hilton
Starring Harvey Keitel, Iain Glen, John Wood, Terence Rigby, Craig Kelly, Thandie Newton and Viggo Mortensen

This flashy and moody crime thriller is set in present day London, and concerns an American detective, John Harris (Keitel), who is sent to help the London police crack a particularly vicious drug ring which is recruiting juvenile delinquents as hit-men in their bid to eliminate their gangland enemies.

The film is visually very impressive and stylishly directed with plenty of graphic violence. Harvey Keitel is impressive in the kind of role that he could do in his sleep, that of the tough, hard-bitten cop. The story, however, is one that has been done countless times before and in many ways is no different from countless other early nineties crime films. The supporting cast is decent with Craig Kelly making an impression as the confused bartender who Keitel uses in order to get information about the villains. It's reasonably fast moving and manages not to get dull, and it also has a point to make about the Americanization of Britain, but there's not much to get excited about.

Four out of ten.
