I'm a high school teacher. Would this be something that I could recommend to my students (in terms of it being interesting and there not being a sex scene or something that will get me fired)?
I'll double-check when I get home, but I don't think there's any language issues in the book (if there are, there aren't enough swears for me to remember them). However, (MINI-SPOILER ALERT) there is one implied rape of one of the lionesses. We don't see the act, just the violence leading up to it and dialogue that suggests what is to happen after (without a graphic description). The same occurs with an implied sexual act, where we get the lead up, but not the scene.
Ultimately, it's no worse than what one might see on CSI or Grey's Anatomy; plus, it's with animals, so I think it'd be fine for high school students. You may want to check it out yourself first though. It's about $20, and I bet you might find it at real book stores (thus avoiding creepy Comic Book Store Guy). The students should find it interesting and topical. It's a nice way to look at the affects of the war that hasn't been done to death.
Whore once, bitch once, damn a few times, crap a few times, hell a few times, and ass once (in reference to a donkey). So, unless the class is really delicate, or the parents are especially touchy, there's no worries with the language.
