Top 5 2005 Movies

Feb 09, 2006 20:09

Sadly, I did not go out and see 10 movies from last year. So, no Top 1o List ... for now ...

Plenty of movies I wish I saw, which could probably be a Top 1o List: Munich, Syriana, Good Night, and Good Luck, Waiting, Wedding Crashers, Grizzly Man, Red Eye, Walk the Line, Jarhead, War of the Worlds, more I'm sure but don't care to mention right now.

5 - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Don't Panic: This movie didn't suck. If you expected a play by play from the novel, then you deserve to be disappointed. Otherwise, this was a terrific comedy, one of the best I've seen in recent years. Sure, there were parts that felt forced, such as the romance angle, but those are a dime a dozen now, and at least the movie doesn't center on it. The movie adapted similar themes and jokes from the works of Adams and sent me home happy.

4 - 40 Year Old Virgin.

Probably the best comedy of 2005. Instead of being an episodic farce where the ultimate joke is yet another bodily fluid reference, this movie has a protagonist who is actually somewhat of an innocent, and let's say naive, guy who happens to be 40 and a virgin, and has trouble adjusting to the dating scene. It was smartly advertised as another gag comedy since they seem to sell well, but it certainly was a surprise to see it as a different movie.

3 - Family Guy: Stewie Griffin - The Untold Story.

I almost had to take timeouts from laughing while watching this movie (drinking probably wasn't helping any). Though the show is getting a little dull now, it is known for pushing just about everyone's buttons, and now that they had the chance to do/say anything they want for a movie, they went ahead and did it. I'll never watch a Bugs Bunny cartoon the same...

2 - Batman Begins.

I confess, I'm not a huge Batman fan, but I loved this one from start to finish. It has a powerful story about the creation of the legend, saves the excessive action scenes for the end, and masterfully builds up the suspense. It's also more believable, Batman here is a hero, of course, but he's capable of being hurt, physically and emotionally, like a real human.

1 - Sin City.

This movie felt perfect in just about every way. Having not read any of the novels, I was expecting the movie to be exclusivly for the readers, but it wasn't that way at all. This movie is a from start to finish thrill ride, with 3 separate, brilliantly crafted stories surrounding people of Sin City. There's characters you really cheer for (In my case, Marv), characters you really hate (Elijah Wood ... creepy ...), tons of "legit LOL moments" (did I get it right this time, Scott?), tons of gruesome "don't know if I can watch" moments, and the movie pulls almost every emotion it can from you, much like Shaun of the Dead.
