Movie Review: In Good Company

Dennis Quad did a great job on this one. The movie starts out by introducing us to Dan Foreman (Quaid) and shows us his successful and experienced career as an Ad Salesman for a major sports magazine. As is often the case, his world of comfort is torn apart, piece by piece because of the change of ownership of his company. Lo and behold, a new boss is introduced. 26 year old Carter Duryea (Topher Grace) is assigned to take over the Sales position formerly held by Dan Foreman and the the movie officially begins.

I thought they did an excellent job of showing the stress that Dan Foreman was going through at this period of his life. He should be nearing the end of a successful career and should be thinking about retirement when he is unexpectedly demoted. At the same time, he finds out his wife is pregnant with another child. Raising teenagers, trouble at work, a new baby on the way. Things just aren't going well for Dan Foreman.

Carter Duryea, on the other hand, is just the opposite. He is an up-and-comer who has the world by the tail. He has a cushy new job, and nice big house, an expensive new sports car, and nothing could be better, until his wife leaves him, that is. In regards to his career, he has everything he could want, but in his personal life, he is definitely lacking. What he wants is what Dan has, and what Carter has is what Dan had. The two roles play off one another perfectly.

So, of course, where does Carter find his next true love if not in the daughter of his new employee, Alex Foreman (Scarlett Johansson). If there is one area of this movie that I can complain about, it would definitely be the performance of Johansson. Her performance was not unlike something from an old Degrassi Junior High episode. She seemed so dry and flatlined that it was almost embarrassing to watch. She had no emotion and was simply reciting the lines she was assigned.

To make a long review short, this was a great movie. Very original with some outstanding performances by Topher Grace and Dennis Quaid. Great entertainment that rates about a 3.5 out of 5.
