Okay, I've counted, checked dates, and I concluded that I indeed have listened to enough albums to make a top five list for 2004. I also rather liked the way
orbitalocularit did her list, so I'm shameless stealing her layout.
5. Sarah Slean- Day One
Honestly, if I listened to more music, I would probably still put Sarah Slean on a top five list. I have a soft spot for this Canadian singer, even though I think Day One is much more uneven than her last album, Night Bugs. She utilizes a fuller sound than in her previous album{A plus} which seems to be a natural progression of her music, even though I don't think it worked 100% of the time with this album.
Best Song: When Another Midnight
Honourable Mentions: Lucky Me, Day One
Skip: Wake Up, Just a tad too long for a slow moving ballad, that half way through becomes a faster moving ballad.
Lyric You Kind of Wish You Wrote: I'd be more inclined to help him if he could remember my name
4.The Killers- Hot Fuss
Apparently one of those bands that has taken the music scene by storm, bla bla bla. They also happened to have some pretty good music on their album. In general the album is kind of inconsistent, but they have enough standout songs to satisfy me{not hard to do}.
Best Song: All These Things I Have Done {Suck it}
Honourable Mentions: Andy You're A Star, Mr. Brightside
Skip: Somebody Told Me, this song is starting to annoy me, not that it actually is the worst song on the album.
Lyric You Kind of Wish You Wrote: I got soul but I'm not a soldier.
3. The Von Bondies-Pawn Shoppe Heart
I could go on about why I like these guys and gals, but it comes down to one song, C'mon, C'mon. That and their name, The Von Bondies. I love it. It also turns out that the rest of their album, has some pretty good songs on it too.
Best Song: C'mon, C'mon
Honourable Mentions: Tell Me What You See, Right of Way
Skip: The title track, Pawn Shoppe Heart. Nine and a half minutes of something that should not be nine and a half minutes long.
Lyric You Kind of Wish You Wrote: And know this day these deepened wounds don't heal so fast
Can't hear me croon of a million lies that speak no truth
2. Franz Ferdinand-Franz Ferdinand
In their self titled debut, Franz Ferdinand gave the world an awesome album, that doesn't have a bad song on it. I love this album. Buy it. Buy it for your friends. Belt out Franz Ferdinand lyrics on public transit. Make a Franz Ferdinand idol so you can worship. Either way, listen to Franz Ferdinand.
Best Song: Take Me Out. I was warming up to The Dark of the Matinee awhile back, but I always come back to Take Me Out.
Honourable Mentions: This Fire, Come On Home
Skip: Auf Achse. Okay, maybe there is a bad song on this album. I've just never taken to this song.
1. Tegan & Sara-So Jealous
This Calgarian sibling singing duo, is simply amazing. If you have to opportunity to listen to these two, do so. If you have to skip your father's birthday, do so. It's not like he hasn't had a birthday before. This is simply the best album I have listened to all year and I think I would still probably say that if I listened to more music.
Best Song: Walking With a Ghost
Honourable Mentions: I Can't Take It, Fix You Up
Skip: Wake Up Exhausted. I don't actually think there is a hands down horrible song on the album{depending on personal taste}, but I had to choose.
Lyric You Kind of Wish You Wrote: No matter which way you go, No matter which way you stay, you're out of my mind
