I went out to my car today after school. Having realized that I hadn't told my mom that I'd be staying after school, I was about to pull out my cell phone to call her when she called me. So, I set down my books on top of my car. Now let me just say, I haven't had my school things organized for a while. It has been a couple of months since I organized things and therefore, most of my papers have been haphazardly stuck between the pages of textbooks or outside of the pockets of folders. It being a particularly windy day, my Biology book on top of the pile flipped open. At first I was shocked and didn't move as I watched ten papers fly away. Then I urgently told my mom that I had to go. I ran after the papers and after realizing that I wasn't going to catch them any time soon, I turned back to see that twenty or more papers had already escaped! Every paper that had been inside my Biology book, my Calculus book, my Java book, and my eclectic, catch-all folder were gone. I hurried back to my car, exasperated, dug into my purse to find my elusive keys, and put everything into the car to prevent further run-aways.
Then I walked to the back of the parking lot (a lot that contains the outline of a football field for band practices) where they'd flown and was relieved to find so many trapped in a ditch between a hill and a neighborhood fence. After collecting those, I looked over to see one whip around the corner of the fence and proceed down the road. I followed and saw that five more were ahead of it. I picked up as many as I could, but had to watch as a couple flew across the busy road. I then resolved to return to my car and drive over to the adjacent parking lot of the elementary school.
I can only guess that this is how it appeared to the bus load of students sitting next to the school: A blue car speeds into the parking lot and parks abruptly in the first available spot. A random girl pops out of the car and runs directly toward the fence of the empty field next to the school, picking up random pieces of paper along the way. She scrambles wildly along the fence grabbing at every piece of garbage stuck in the fence. With the papers clutched to her chest, she walks wearily back to her car and drives away.
