We missed about the first half, in the hecticness of getting home from work and picking up the farm veggie box and hurriedly preparing some dinner, then OOPS!  The debate is on!  And a run for the radio.  Spread out a blanket on the floor of the Big Room and picnicked while listening to the 2nd half, with small children running about and explaining to the older one about the candidates' intentional use of emotion-packed terms like "second holocaust."

There's a big difference between watching the debates on TV and listening on the radio.  We noticed this four years ago in the Kerry/Bush debates, how Kerry came across as rational and appealing to the logical side of humanity, while Bush roared and ranted with emotional sound-bites.  I remember being surprised to hear that the public considered that Bush had "won" that.  But, when you can't see them, you have to *listen*.

Last night was no exception.  Obama sounded good, but there were several instances when he was disagreeing with something McCain was saying, and you could hear him in the background saying, "No, no, no," and trying to interject *during* McCain's time, and on the radio that sounded really awkward.  But then I went on Twitter afterwards, and read that McCain wouldn't even make eye contact with Obama, and that's something that we missed.  People are taking that as a sign of discomfort, that's good.

And good on Obama for slipping in that comment about McCain's immature "Bomb Iran" song.

McCain:  "What Senator Obama does not understand..." about fifty billion times.  Give it a rest!

Another good on Obama:  Taking the question on foreign policy re: Russia and turning it into a question on the necessity of America's energy independence.  He's strong on that, and I think it's something we all want to hear more about.

On the slate for today:  Plan for Children's Program tomorrow, change water in fish tank, clean bathrooms.  Debate foreign policy.
