Her name’s Maotou Ying (猫头鹰). It just means “owl” in Chinese. Roughly translating that, “owl” means “cat headed eagle” so there’s probably going to be a bunch of jokes on this. She’s an owl youkai and owls symbolize as the harbinger of death in China. In her bag are messages with a heart-shaped sticker on the back like love letters, but they’re clearly messages of death. It’s a bit of her way to show her love. Other things inside are spell cards.
Obviously because her name is Chinese, the others thought it should be easier to call her Matou Kyou (キョウ まとう Kyou Matou). Pretty much means “twisting/wrapping owl” as it makes sense with her attacks (Ohoho making lame Touhou puns with my own characters).
One of her special trademark attack comes from three rows of bullets from each side of her that try to wrap around the player and then later twist into a huge pillar before going off stage. Another attack that is a trademark of hers is three bullets that land in random places on the stage which then the bullets burst out creating a heart, spins around, and then goes off stage. Man, I don’t know if they even make sense anymore.
