I agree with Lindsay that college could quite possibly be the best change of scenery for you. Granted, it's costly, but it's doable. And it would be a very big change, particularly if you live at school, but that might just be what you need.

If that seems too drastic at this point, then take the baby steps you need for independence. Get a checking account, for sure. Washington Mutual lives by there "no fees" policy, and other banks offer special deals for students or young people sometimes. Either way, walk into a bank and get it done. You'll leave with your newly activated ATM card for your very own account.

Be sure you're saving whatever money you can manage to put away. Even if it's just $20, that's your emergency fund.

Take the little steps, like these, that will help you feel more autonomous. Your outlook will change and you just might feel a lot less stuck in the mud.

Moving out is a big deal. But you're capable of it. People are capable of drastic things when put into drastic situations, and I understand completely that yours is very troubling. I choose to hide in my bedroom, with the luxury of being on the other side of the house from my mom.

You very well may need to escape, but if you can't do it today, start preparing yourself to be ready to leave tomorrow.*

*Please note the metaphoric attempt on my part. I don't mean today nor tomorrow to be literal, but I think you can get the point. If you can't leave now, prepare so you can live in the future should things become even more unbearable.
