"hm."
"it wouldn't take long." yeh sung muttered, blowing a stream of smoke past his lips towards his feet. he dropped the cigarette carelessly onto the pavement behind their dorm, squishing it with the underside of his sneaker. jet black hair framed his face and kept his emotion hidden, his eyes downcast, tiny hands twisting to crack his knuckles in the silence. these continued hidden visits behind the dorm with kang in in order to smoke were starting to really piss him off.
kang in's eyes scanned over the piece of junk sitting in the garbage pile. it wasn't really a garbage pile, it was more like odds-and-ends near the shed that nobody wanted to claim or do shit with, but this thing was still a piece of junk. "mm." the piece of junk park bench stared at the two boys with its silent, wooden eyes, curves of the arms curling under like eyelashes. the feet dipped out like a pair of elf boots. what a cheery, fucking park bench.
yeh sung's eyes squinted. "do you say anything other than 'hm' or 'mm'?"
kang in slapped his hand lightly against the front of yeh sung's shoulder, furrowing his brow and dropping his own cigarette down onto the pavement. he demolished it with his shoe. "we'll dig it out of there in a couple days and look at it."
a couple days passed, and the park bench continued to flirt with kang in as he and yeh sung tugged it out of the pile of wreckage. "push it, yeh sung."
"i am pushing it." he almost growled, the bottoms of his sneakers scraping along the pavement as his upper body struggled and strained and leaned. the bench was stuck underneath plenty of other damaged goods, which seemed like a plot cooked up by the devil himself. kang in clenched his teeth and tilted his body back, yanking his end of the bench towards himself all in one swift movement.
"shit!" various other damaged goods instantly came loose from their bonds, toppling and spilling over onto yeh sung's body. as he dived down in front of the bench to avoid getting hit, he could hear kang in's laughter deep in his ribs.
"ahahaha. fool." kang in laughed, going over and shoving old pots and rusted pieces of something away from his older bandmate. "get up."
yeh sung lay scowling underneath the bench. "don't touch me." he rolled out from underneath it and stood, sighing angrily and dusting his clothes off.
the bench stood still for another few days, the same silent view of the dorm's backyard staring it in the face. one cold afternoon brought the boys back outside, a few paper bags in their hands filled with cleaning and repairing tools. kang in looked at the bench and found it to be flirting once more now that it realized they were back to clean it up.
yeh sung grabbed a towel, going to work on wiping the bench down before using a soapy cleanser to wash the arms and legs afterwards. kang in dug a few tools out of one of the bags, replacing rusted down nuts and bolts silently. once they were finished, they stood back and looked at the flirting park bench before them.
kang in chewed on his bottom lip. yeh sung twisted the towel in his hands.
"think it's good?" kang in asked quickly.
"mm..." yeh sung burrowed his eyebrows, then looked over at his bandmate. "why don't you sit on it?"
kang in made a face and looked back at him. "why do i have to sit on it? you go sit on it."
yeh sung scowled, only to hear one of their phones going off. ee teuk was calling to remind them of their schedules.
they looked at their bench one more time in silence. it was cleaner, but not brand new; it looked... healthier, somehow. the wood looked lighter, softer, and the arms and legs looked sharper, stronger in their original green. all spruced up. new shades of makeup for that flirting face. yeh sung and kang in looked at each other for a few seconds before kang in shrugged, pushing past him and cleaning up the tools they'd brought out. yeh sung locked his jaw in annoyance.
they still hadn't been able to test their bench. the effort they put up, the time they went through and took out of their busy schedules to buy things and sneak away and fix a stupid, cheery park bench was not amounting to anything. several more days went by until they couldn't stand it any longer. it was almost like an itch on that spot they couldn't reach on their backs. the only time they could sneak out was the following night, the air chilly as they tugged hoods up over their heads.
"couldn't we wait until it was warmer?!" yeh sung said angrily, pulling a jacket on over his hoodie. he failed to mention, however, that he wanted to try it just as much as kang in did. it almost seemed to be eating up his insides.
"it'll never happen that way, what are you, stupid?" kang in pulled the door open and made his way out, yeh sung following along behind him impatiently. they hurried out to the back.
their park bench sat happily in the same spot they'd left it in earlier in the week. it was almost as if they'd expected to find it missing or moved or... alive and dancing the tango. yeh sung and kang in came to a stop, shivering slightly from the cold air.
"all right..." kang in said, digging through his pockets and taking out his pack of cigarettes. yeh sung rubbed his hands together and blew into them, then took a cigarette from kang in quietly. he stuck the tip of it into his mouth, holding it there while retrieving his lighter.
the moment was thick. yeh sung lit kang in's cigarette, then his own, both boys slowly putting away what wasn't needed. they took a couple starter drags and blew the smoke out past their lips, each of them curiously eyeing their park bench in between the clouds of smoke.
"...you think it's good?"
"...why don't you sit on it?"
"asshole. we'll both sit on it."
the bottoms of their shoes gently scraped and crunched against the pavement as they shuffled to their bench, jackets rustling as they turned and slowly sat together.
both boys let out quiet breaths.
kang in sat hunched over while yeh sung leaned back into it, clearing his throat gently.
"hm." kang in took another quiet drag before leaning back into the bench himself. yeh sung glanced at him and watched his face, the smallest smile curving onto his lips. kang in looked back over at him and felt himself smile slowly as well.
the only warning the boys had was the sound of wood splitting into pieces before the bench's seat fell out from under them, their bodies dropping straight onto the pavement as the arms and legs of their park bench continued to flirt - except now it flirted with the stars in the crisp night sky, giggling quietly at the two fallen boys in its middle.
