just_muse_me: Say Something You Immediately Regret

Mar 25, 2009 17:00

“No! Because you’re a junkie whose habit has FINALLY caught up with him!” The moment the words left Bree’s mouth, she regretted them. She didn’t mean it. Not in the slightest. But she was tired and worried and just as frustrated with the whole ordeal as he was.

For the past six weeks their lives had been turned upside down all because some “Columbo Wannabe” had gotten it in his head that House had offended him. She had tried to be understanding. Really. And she thought she had been doing a good job of it…until now. Three days before Christmas and she snapped.

“Dad…”

Her father cut her off with nothing more than a look. Sure, he could have used some witty comment about heroin versus pills -Daddy’s little helpers and all that - but it didn’t seem appropriate. Nothing seemed appropriate. What do you say when your daughter has just called you a drug addict?

For House, the answer was nothing. He didn’t say a word. He just turned and left the room.

Standing there, Bree watched as he disappeared down the hall, his door slamming shut. Had this been any other fight, she would have gone and knocked - apologized for what she said and asked what he wanted for dinner. But this wasn’t any other fight. She had crossed a line and trying to continue now would only bring about round two. Something she wasn’t sure she was ready for.

So instead, she scribbled out a note, letting her father know she had gone to Joanie’s and grabbed her overnight bag, shoving into it everything she would need for the next day or so. This way they both had a chance to calm down. And then, by the time she got home, it would be like it never happened. Completely forgotten.

Just like always.
