This time the trees with the white lights gently shaking in the breeze is to my left and a vacant, dimly lit Dress Barn is to my right.
The city is quiet once again. We've managed to do two calls already. This will be the first weekend shift since changing to night shift and I'm cautiously optimistic that it will be decent.
I'll have to set the alarm for the first time in two weeks tomorrow to make sure I get up by 4pm so I can go to the gym before work and not have to rush around.
So speaking of the gym, I have been going four times a week since going to nights. I have been doing only cardio and that is in the form of swimming. I have been swimming 32 lengths which equals 1/2 of a mile. I plan to increase this distance once I can swim all 16 laps without stopping because I need to catch my breath. I have a feeling that will come within a few weeks. I have a sign taped to my refrigerator that reads "GO TO THE GYM GENETICS IS WORKING AGAINST YOU" as motivation. Since January of this year I have made some conscious decisions about modifying my eating habits. I have posted about most of them.
1. Eat nothing that contains high fructose corn syrup (or it's impostors.)
2. Since June 1st, eat vegetarian when cooking at home or at work.
3. Try not to eat refined carbohydrates.
4. Drink more water. At least 96 oz. (3 litres) of water per day.
5. No fast food, period.
So far, these five things are going well. It's very hard to not eat refined carbohydrates. It's also hard to drink all that water. I have had HFCS three times since January, no fast food, and I have not cooked any meat since June 1st. I have ate it twice while out with friends.
My decision to switch to vegetarian eating is based on several reasons. I don't want to support the commercial-industrial meat producers any longer. I do not believe in what they are doing and I feel that they are killing the America. I also made this decision based on animal advocacy. Is the meat producing industry raising the animals in a humane way? Hell no! Are these animals processed in a way that promotes health safety? NO! I don't have the energy to find meat that comes from animals that were fed their natural organic diet, raised in a humane environment, slaughtered and processed in a safe, health conscious environment. Why do all this work so I can eat meat? I'm not. With the abundance of organic produce sold today, it's not very difficult and not nearly as corrupt as the commercial-industrial meat producers. I also decided to switch to vegetarian for health reasons. After a ton of research it is my belief that eating vegetarian is far healthier than a meat-centric diet.
Why am I making all of these changes? Seeing my mother die at 49 and my father die at 57 has made me realize that I need to take a hard look at my lifestyle and make some serious decisions about how I need to live to make it harder for genetics to kill me.
