Emily sighed as they arrived at another dead end. She slowly turned to get a 360 view and, hopefully, some idea of which way they were supposed to be going. “I think we took a wrong turn at the scarecrow in the hockey mask.”

“How can you even tell?” David grumbled as he sat on a nearby bale of hay. “This entire place looks the same. Even the landmarks and check points look the same.” He gave a sigh. “We should’ve just plowed straight through the damned thing, corn stalks and all, like I suggested.”

“That would’ve been cheating.”

“I’m not above cheating if it gets us to the end faster.”

“Ends justify the means?” Emily’s lips quirked up.

“In this case, absolutely.” David checked his shoes. “I can’t believe Reid talked us all into this.”

Emily moved to sit beside David. “Every year Reid gets excited for Halloween and, every year, we end up getting called to a case for the holiday. The least we can do for him is indulge him in a little corn maze.”

There was a long silence in which the two made a home.

“You know we’re going to die in here,” David commented with a casual smirk.

“Did you know that in Kojiki, the oldest surviving book in Japan, there’s a scarecrow named Kuebiko?”

David took a deep sip of his wine and drawled. “Oh, please, tell us more, won’t you?”

Reid smiled. “He appeared as a deity who couldn’t walk but knew everything about the world. There was also a scarecrow featured in one of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s pieces -“

“Reid,” Emily pulled his attention with a firm, but gentle, voice. “That…that might be enough scarecrow chat for the moment.”

“Oh, uh…sorry.”

David smiled. “No need to apologize, it was very…informative. I just don’t want mt food getting cold.”

Emily leaned over as the agents returned to their respective meals. “Thank you, David.”

“For?”

“Indulging him.”

David smiled and gave a wink.

David had agreed to let Emily use the backyard of his townhouse when she said she needed his help, but this wasn’t exactly what he’d expected. This was far more amusing as he took another sip of his Manhattan and watched Emily stuff the plaid shirt with leaves and hay. “You know Morgan is going to kill you if he finds out you’re responsible.”

“He won’t.”

“Are you sure?”

Emily smiled. “Not unless you tell him and, if you do, you’re next.”

“I afraid I don’t find scarecrows all that frightening.”

“Well I’m sure Morgan doesn’t usually either, but once he gets in his car and this baby shows up in the rear-view from the backseat he’ll think a little differently.”

“Remind me again why you’re doing this.”

“To get back at him for the fake severed hand in my desk drawer.”

David ticked his head to the side. “I thought he did that because you put the glass eye in his coffee cup.”

“Only after he put the plastic spiders in my locker,” Emily insisted as she finished stuffing the dummy. “Now help me get this thing in the trunk.”

“I don’t think so,” Rossi chuckled out from his seat on the porch.

“David.”

“Emily.”
