Summary: Benny runs into April while doing early Christmas shopping.
Benny sighed as he navigated around yet another screaming kid and his aggravated mother. And this would be why he hated to go into toy stores. But then again, the sooner he got this over with…
He picked a fluffy pink teddy bear at random from the shelf and headed toward the cash register, doing his best not to trip over four- and five-year-olds on the way. It was not an easy task, and upon reaching the cash register he didn’t look up at the cashier at first, instead looking quizzically at a little blond girl who kept making faces at him. Yes, definitely the last time he went into a toy store for a long time.
“Hi Benny,” the cashier chirped, and he jumped, turning to face her. April picked up the teddy bear and studied it for a second before grinning up at Benny. “You know, I think pink is really your color. Especially in fuzzy teddy bears.”
He rolled his eyes, smiling at her. “I’m doing early Christmas shopping. I have a niece.”
April raised an eyebrow as she started to ring up the teddy bear. “You go Christmas shopping in the middle of November?”
“Well, I beat the crowds.”
“Yeah, by about a month and a half,” she said with her characteristically impish smile. Impossible for anyone to be annoyed with her when she smiled like that. Absently, she added, “That’s $13.27.”
“Since when have you been working here?” he asked as he handed her a twenty dollar bill.
She paused, with just a momentary downward flicker of her eyes, before answering brightly. “Thought I ought to get a little extra cash before Christmas.” She chuckled softly upon seeing Benny’s raised eyebrow. “Hey, I’m working inside and no one’s throwing anything at me. It’s a good day!”
“People throw things at you?”
“Well, just the one time when some kids in the ball pit got a little crazy… Don’t look at me like that!” She handed him his change and the bag with the teddy bear. “Enjoy your pink fuzzy teddy bear, Benny!”
He gave her a tolerant smile more amused than annoyed. “It’s for my niece!”
“Sure it is,” she said, grinning at him as she started to ring up the next customer. “You just keep telling people that.”
