For ages now my computer has been being a bitch and playing up on me. I kept asking Tim if he could back up all my stuff for me so that we could format it but he never got around to it. And then Wednesday night my computer decided that was it. Found out yesterday that EVERYTHING on my computer is gone :-(

My first question is to nerds - are you ( Read more... )

It'll cost to go see if you can get it recovered, but ultimately cheaper than rebuying your music and losing all your photo memories.

And after you read this comment, do NOT do anything else on the computer until you take it in to get recovered! Not a thing! I read about this once, and I'm not sure if I'm recounting the details perfectly, but when stuff gets deleted on your computer, some of that data still remains and can be recovered. But everytime you use your computer, the new data that's being processed saves over a little of the old data that's being stored. Or something. But stop using your computer immediately!

True dat. But I suspect she's not using her computer, if it's as dead as it sounds.

Yeah, it remains until written over, which is what formatting is, in a sense. Unless things went really fubar. ;)

Unless things have changed recently, Leanne's computer is the only one in the house. And if she's at work, someone else may even be on it now, not realising they're potentially screwing things up. Hmm. Maybe I should SMS her and let her know.

*sigh* I am quite pissed off. Tim and I argued last night about it. He reckoned there was no way to get everything back and I knew I had seen things were they can recover deleted stuff off a computer - police do it all the time. So he reinstalled windows and refused to call Chris, his friend who is like a genuis with computers. So I used the computer for about half an hr before work this morning to put my plea out there but Tim has been playing computer games on it all afternoon grrrr.

I already feel like he is partly to blame for things stuffing up in the first place and I asked him not to do anything with the computer cuz a) he doesn't know what he is doing. b) someone might be able to fix it but not if we've been using it.

Men never listen. so pissed off.

Oh man. Bitch slap Tim for me, ok? Because you've got pretty much 0 chance now if he's reinstalled Windows. If you hadn't touched it and taken it straight in to get repaired, they probably could have recovered nearly everything - if the harddrive itself isn't damaged, I think they can recover stuff fairly easily. This is common sense! Even if you know next to nothing about computers you should know not to touch it until a professional has had a chance! *flail* I'm angry at him on your behalf!

Stop using the computer anyway and give your friend Chris a call ASAP and ask if anything can be done given the circumstances. If it can't, well. :( Sorry?

Awww man. Sorry. :(

It's still possible the particular parts of the hard-drive haven't been written over yet. Re-installing Windows is one thing but it only would have destroyerised everything if it was formatted first.
