does anybody use livejournal any more? or is it just me and my friends that have pretty much abandoned it and moved on to facebook and twitter and *shudder* myspace? if you've moved on to myspace you're no friend of mine, but i'm just curious because my friends page has been ridiculously quiet for a long time now, and i've certainly not been ( Read more... )

I actually agree. I managed to stay away from MySpace because I loathe it, but a lot of my friends started to peel off from LJ during it's height of popularity. I've come to like Facebook and Twitter for their own reasons (Facebook more-so, Twitter is just a toy), but I really miss being able to easily pour out 3 pages of rambling in the morning, and then just a silly picture in the afternoon, and a quick update at night. No character, or content, limits. I was sure who would read it, and liked seeing their replies.

I felt a lot closer to people that I really got to know through LJ than anywhere else before or since. I don't see that sort of closeness happening with 140 character limits, and that's kind of a shame. I guess that's not it's purpose, but it's sad that it almost completely prohibits it altogether.

After re-reading my old journal entries from this journal and the one I had before it, while I was a sad and whiny fucker, just looking at the posts and the amount of helpful or fun replies I got was just good to see. I wish there was something like that now, but FB seems to be king, and everybody's using it now so even if I started using LJ again it wouldn't give me the feeling I'm looking for.

One feature I loathe about FB is the fact that your reply, meant to be directed at one person, gets mailed out to every single person in that entire thread of comments. In turn, your inbox will get flooded with all sorts of erroneous spam and comments from people you don't even know, or care to know.

Also, I met a few of my closest friend via LJ before the myspace boom, when you had to have a paid account to use the directory. I just searched local folks and serial added them, and the rest is history. :P You can't do that with FB! Ahhhhh, I miss those days.

I hate that too. I mean I get that they want it to be social and to introduce you to new people and all that; but just adding a little checkbox that says "email me responses to this post", even if it's checked by default, would be wonderful. Sometimes I just want to call someone a douche and let that be the end of it.
