Chapter 21.5: Epilogue.

So here, ladies and gentlemen, is where my story ends.

I had lived in the woods for almost three months before my brothers and I returned to the real world to live with our mother’s sister and her husband about twenty miles from the Village.

I spent the first week wanting to walk all the way back there; walk back to the warm set of arms connected to the boy with the goofy grin and the coffee-cup eyes.

And the nights that followed were spent alone under the stars; dreaming that there was a hooded boy holding me in his arms in some perfect town.

The weeks after that were spent dreaming that I had never even left. I would wake up every night in a cold sweat, almost in tears, to find that I wasn't in a tree house.

And Pete wasn't lying next to me.

I graduated high school two years later, avoiding collisions with bullies and sexuality conversations…most of the time.

But what exactly made me want to write this book, you may ask?

About a month after I moved from my aunt's house [regretfully leaving a fifteen-year-old Mike and a ten-year-old Gabe behind] I found this wonderful apartment not far from where Pete grew up.

And waiting for me one night, sitting elegantly on my pillowcase, was a tiny silver thimble.

"Is someone there?" I asked fearfully, gripping my cell phone tightly.

The voice that broke through the dark was deep and familiar. "Very clever boy, aren't you."
