Ear scabs

I got one, NO IDEA what caused it, it just appeared one day. I've been using a pointy end of a dental floss stick, a bent-back hook part of an earring, and tweezers to try and pick it, and still can't get it all. HOW do you pick such a thing? What causes it? ISN'T IT TORTURE? It itches so bad! I just cannot seem to pick it properly.
