So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

The expression of bewilderment had come back into Gatsby's face, as though a faint doubt had occurred to him as to the quality of his present happiness. Almost five years! One of my favourite books. It's so masterfully written. I haven't read it for ages, but after seeing this post, I'm going to pick it up!

I highly recommend re-reading this book. It gets you out of that "what's going to happen next?" mindset and leaves you free to appreciate the finer details. There were so many points where I just had to stop reading. I think my reaction to the characters was a lot more intense in this reading. I remember kind of liking Nick, feeling a little bad for Gatsby at the end, and not thinking too highly of Tom and Daisy.

This time I really liked Nick. I thought Gatsby was heart-breakingly tragic. Tom felt like a big hulking caveman who never says or does anything remotely good/not in his own interest. Daisy just appeared careless and stupid. I remember feeling a little bad for her being stuck unhappily married to Tom the first time through. This time, I felt like she deserved it.

Also, I caught the moments where Fitzgerald captures the whole point of the book in a single sentence or passage. ex: the ones I quoted in the post, but there are so many more.

Yesterday i cleaned out the trunk of my car. My church does a big slae every year and everything that doesnt get bought gets thrown out. My mom does the book booth and they were gonna throw out a ton of classic books so I took them all and was gonna try to find an organization for an underprivledged school or something where they could use such books. I haven't found one yet.. most want new books or "gently used" these are fairly beat up.. but readable. But anyway as I was going through i found that one and thought of you. i haven't read it myself. but I'm going to have to now. I also have about 4 copies of crime and punishment and a pleathera of shakespeare.
