Nothing like a nice dinner to soothe one's self. It was such a nice day today that I stopped off at my neighborhood butcher on the way home to get something to throw on the grill. I haven't barbecued yet this year and I figured tonight was a great time to start. I really love having an honest to goodness, old-fashioned butcher shop in the area. Not only are the meats of much higher quality than anything I find at the supermarkets, it's also nice to be supporting the local community. Plus, being able to do my food shopping at the local shops lets me buy as I need instead of trudging off to the supermarkets and having to buy for a week or two at a time. Sadly, all of the "old tyme" shops are slowly disappearing. Bakeries, fish markets, delicatessens and even bars are closing up and being replaced by nail salons, bodegas and national chains like Dunkin' Donuts and Subway. Frankly, I can't understand the appeal of these places when higher quality, better tasting and often *cheaper* alternatives are right next door. Where was I? ... oh yes ... the butcher. While looking over the case I spied a beautiful hunk of beef. It was a T-bone that sang out to me like one of the sirens. The marbling in it was just perfect! I had to have one. So of course, I did! Anthony, the butcher, held it up for me to see and choose where/how I wanted it sliced. Service and quality. Both something lacking in those national chains. Anyway, without further ado I give you ...
Tonight's Menu!
Fresh salad greens with cucumber and thinly sliced red onion tossed in a balsamic vinaigrette.
A 1-3/4" thick prime t-bone steak, seasoned with salt and lots of fresh ground black pepper, char-grilled to perfection. (rare)
Fresh green beans sautéed with red onion, garlic and fresh ginger.
Croissant roll with butter.
Brooklyn Oktoberfest Beer.
Fresh fruit.
And for dessert ... a sfinge, which is an Italian pastry traditionally made for the San Giuseppe feast. It has a fried shell (similar to a French cruller) stuffed with cannoli cream.
But honestly, I don't know if I'll get to dessert. The steak was *so* good. And *so* big. And *so* juicy and tender. It was like buttuh!!
And I'm full. :)
