I bought Evanescence's new album, The Open Door yesterday, was bored enough to review it. :P
Firstly this album is pretty different to Fallen. It's heavier and softer at the same time. Amy Lee whines a lot more in this album. The lyrics are a lot more deep and meaningful. And it has a lot more ballads on it - which for me was a bit disappointing because the reason I loved Evanescence was for their more upbeat rock songs. There's still some of it on this album, but not as much.
Sweet Sacrifice - Probably the standout song of the album. Amy whines but its good whining, lyrics are good, music is awesome, especially the guitars. Perfect start to the album.
Call me when you're sober - Everyone's heard it, it's an awesome song. It's the song that is most like old Evanescence on this CD.
Weight of the World - Another song that reminds me of old Evanescence's style. It's more spooky and gothic/metal sounding though, which is why I love it.
Lithium - A nice rocky ballad, on the heavier side. Don't expect a 'My Immortal' though here, it's different, once again a lot creepier sounding.
Cloud Nine - Heavier rock more upbeat song, Amy Lee whines in this song a bit though, it sort of ruins the mood, but I still like the song. I love the creepy howl the chior does in this song, its' cool. :D
Snow White Queen - The Chorus is awesome in the song, but the verses are a bit boring, slow and sleepy sounding. But yeah, the chorus saves this song from being totally crap. Also the bridge before the last chorus is really powerful sounding, very cool. :D
Lacrymosa - I don't really like this song yet. It's just.. not good. Slow for the most part, some good guitar though. It sounds like bad church music to me.
Like You - The guitar in the background of the start of the song sounds so good, but it goes and stays in a pretty unemotional sounding ballad. So yeah, I didn't like it.
Lose control - Pretty sounding Piano in this song, then heavy guitar takes over. ^_^ Amy's singing is really awesome too here. Another standout song on this album - this song has to grow on you though.
The Only One - Another old Evanescence sounding song. I like the sound of this song but it'd going to take time to grow on me. Nice heavy guitar though.
Your Star - Piano, then guitar kicks in, much like many of the songs above. Didn't impress me at all. But the song gets progessively stronger which is a nice effect. It sounds a bit like the last song from Fallen with the chior coming in.
All That I'm Living For - Best. start. to. any. Evanescence. song. You think it's gonna be a strong rock song the whole way but it changes after 10 seconds into a piano ballad. Then the Chorus comes back to the same music from the start. So yeah, ballad-y verses and rocky choruses. It's a weird combination for Evanescence. I don't know what to make of this song. It'll have to grow on me more but I like it for now. :D
Good Enough - Piano-y crap. Definitely the worst song on the album, and the worst way to finish off the CD.
Overall.. ummm... I think either 6 or 7/10. Some really good songs on here, but still a few bad ones, a lot more bad songs than Fallen had on it. Maybe it just needs to grow on me more, I don't know. But there's enough good songs to keep me loving the album for a few weeks at least. :D
