Girls,

I wanted to inform you that I have notified the District that I will not be returning for the 2008 season as the Head Coach of the girls soccer program.  As many of you know in June of 2007, I began a one-year leave of absence from the district to pursue career work in an alternative occupation. That position has worked out very well for me this last year and I will continue to serve in that line of work indefinitely.  Unfortunately, the demands of that position will not allow me to continue as coach of the Girls Soccer Program.  No word has been communicated to me as to who my successor will be.

I consider myself very fortunate to have worked with each of you (and many others) over the last 14 years.  I wish each of you and your families well.

Downs

This news was a little disappointing. Downs was one of my better coaches of my life, if not the best. For my whole soccer career, I was Ms. Underdog. But he saw the potential I had as a player and pushed me to be really good, and I'm really happy about that. He let me be the freshman who played every minute, and I'm upset that I tore my ACL when he was out. It's almost like he brought me good luck to every game. I'll always cherish my first high school game against Notre Dame under the lights. I really really can't describe the way it feels; it's like the rest of the world could blow away because for this one moment everyone you know is cheering for you, as a defender, to save that ball from going into the net. And then you save the ball and you could run laps around the field; you don't even have to breathe. You're just this incredible ball of steam and you don't even know why you're running so fast, but you have to keep up with your heart, so you keep running down the field screaming. Sam, I'm sure you know the feeling...

Anyway, Downs really gave me the chance to feel that way. I'm happy about that. I probably wasn't going to play next season, but it's sad that no one else can be given that opportunity, or at least not with Downs by her side. I don't think Hoffman could amount to Downs, ever.
