Grey's anatomy - Calzone fanfic - By your side

Callie Torres was simply destroyed. She had quite a day and the fact that her ex-husband wanted to join the army seemed to be the worse thing that could happen, or at least, she thought like this just a few hours ago.

When she still was in the Before.

Before Meredith Grey, screaming like crazy, told her that John Doe, the man that almost died under a bus, the man they keep in surgery all day, was nothing but George.
Before Izzie Stevens coded for her high hyperkalemia and she was put on a life-support machine.

Her shift was technically over, she also changed her clothes, but she just couldn’t leave the hospital.
She sat on a chair next to the bed where her ex husband was lying, she couldn’t stop to look his tumefied body; his face and almost his whole body were covered with bandages and he was put on life-support machine too, to guarantee his survival.
He was in critical conditions, the survival rate after a such bad trauma was really low, even if Hunt said that he saw worse.
She came out of her trance when she felt a little hand based softly on her shoulder, then she turned around.

“Dr. Sloan told me what happened. Why didn’t you page me?” Arizona said, a little more harder than she wanted.

“I thought you were still angry with me, for this afternoon…” the brunette admitted.

A glare of comprehension showed on Arizona’s face. Callie’s silence hurt her, she thought for a moment that she didn’t want her by her side in such a critical situation. Fortunately, she was wrong.

“How is he now?” the blonde asked, gently.

“Technically he’s stable, we kept him in the OR all day, but he’s still unconscious. His wounds were very deep, he only has a few chances to recover. Hunt is on call tonight, he will verify his conditions every half an hour” Callie answered, with an atonic voice.

She was very nicely surprised by Arizona’s presence, despite they had an hard fight in the afternoon. Her only presence made her feel better.

“I see. Well, I think you need to take some rest, come on I’ll take you home” Arizona said, extending the hand to make her up.

“I don’t wanna sleep, I’m not tired, I wanna stay here” replied Callie, with vehemence.

“Callie… Things are not going to change, even if you stay here. He’s stable, he’s monitored, tomorrow you will stay here beside him, but now you’re exhausted and you have to take a rest, or you’ll not be able to help him tomorrow, when he’ll need you. I don’t think it’s a great idea to sleep on your scalpel in the OR” repeated calmly Arizona.

Callie stayed in silence for a while to think over her words. She looked alternately George, then her girlfriend’s hand; at last, she took her hand and left the room without saying a word.
However, instead of taking the elevator to leave the hospital, Callie went in the opposite direction, under the perplexed gaze of the ped’s surgeon.

“There’s something else I have to do, before I go” she explained briefly, while she was dragging Arizona through the hospital’s corridors.

They were outside Izzie’s room when they stopped.
The two of them observed the scene in front of their eyes: Izzie was lying unconscious on her bed, her mouth attacked to the life-support machine, her arms full of tubes. Beside her, Karev sat on a chair, lying his head and his arms on her wife’s bed, a very painful expression on his face.
Callie took off Arizona’s hand and approached Cristina, that was only a few metres from their, filling Izzie’s chart.

“Hey, are you going home?” the Korean whispered, taking off her eyes from the charts.

“Yeah” Callie briefly answered. “How is she?”

“The hyperkalemia is almost normal, but her heart stopped for a while… She could… She could not wake up” Cristina finally said.

They looked at each other for what seemed like an eternity, then Callie added

“Listen, you’re on call tonight, I want you to page me if there are any kind of news about Izzie or George, ok?”

“Ok. Owen and me will stay here all night long, if there are any changes, you will know it”.

“Thank you” the Latina said, then she turned and started to go to the elevators.

Arizona followed her.

“Dr. Robbins?” Cristina called her.

“Yes, dr. Yang?” the woman answered, looking at her.

“Stay with her, she needs you” Cristina whispered, with a worried and tired expression.

“Don’t you worry. Thanks dr. Yang” the blonde said, with a little smile.

“You have to go bed Callie, you absolutely have to take some rest” Arizona said calmly, when they arrived in Callie’s bedroom. Her words broke the silence that had lasted since they left the hospital.

“I thought that you call me Calliope” the brunette said, ignoring her girlfriend’s words and sitting on her bed.

“I thought that you hate me calling you like that. This afternoon you told me with some anger that I do not Calliope you” Arizona hard replied, looking straight in Callie’s eyes.

“I don’t hate it at all. When you call me like that, my name sounds incredibly cute”

She smiled weakly, that seemed to be very hard for her trying to smile in that moment.

“I’m sorry Arizona, I’m so sorry for earlier. I… I was… I was so worried, so out of my mind, I couldn’t see anything else. I’ve been silly and selfish and blind… Please, forgive me” the brunette implored.

“Don’t leave me” she finally whispered.

Arizona sat on the bed just beside her, and took gently her hands between hers.

“You… You’re pushing me away. Don’t you see that I’m hurt? You’re hurting me. Don’t you see that I… that I lo… That I care about you? A lot. I… I wanna stay with you Calliope, have you understand that? But you… You’re still pushing me away…” the blonde said, with tears in her eyes.

“I wanna stay with you too! And I didn’t want to push you away, and I didn’t want to hurt you. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry…” Callie said, getting close to her and slowly caressing her cheek, where there was a little tear.

She gently kissed her, trying to put in that simple act all her feelings for her, and when she kissed her back, Callie thought that has worked.

When they fell apart, Arizona wrapped her arms beside Callie’s neck and softly looked her in her eyes. “Now you have to sleep”

“Yeah… I’m not sure to succeed…” the Latina sadly replied.

“Just try” Arizona encouraged her, embracing her girlfriend.

“Oh, Arizona?”

“Yes, Calliope?”

Callie smiled at the sound of her name. She was happy to be called like this by her.

“You make me feel happy, really happy. You brought me back to life. And I love you too. So much. Did you know that?”

Arizona’s eyes grew wider from astonishment, as she was invaded by a wave of pure joy. It was the very first time that her girlfriend showed her feeling like this.

“I do, now” the blonde said with a glowing smile, holding her tightly.

They laid on the bed, still embraced.

“Stay here tonight, don’t go away” Callie whispered.

“I’m not going anywhere Calliope. I stay here. I’ll always be. By your side”.
