"I mark this day with a white stone"

Today is Charles Dodgson's aka Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland, and my dad's birthday. *throws confetti* Charles Dodgson fascinates me. I've written 2 papers for English classes about him and Alice in Wonderland.

For his b-day:

a math problem written in one of his letters-
(#^2 means the number is squared)

If x and y are each equal to 1, it is plain that 2x(x^2 - y^2)=0 and also, 5x (x-y)=0. Hence, 2x (x^2 - y^2) = 5x (x-y)

Now divide each side of the equation by (x - y).

Then, 2x (x + y) = 5.

But (x + y) = (1+1), i.e. =2.

So that 2 x 2 = 5.

:)

and some quotes:

“"If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?”

“Doorknob: Read the directions and directly you will be directed in the right direction.”

"I  can't explain myself, I'm afraid, Sir, because I'm not myself you see."
