Photographs are time passed, time past, once removed. We'd rather witness than act. We're nostalgic for anthing that has already happened.
Here the photograph is the fossil, to be used for retrieval of information or emotions "stored" at various levels of consciousness.

Just recently I ran across a photograph of myself several years ago, a perfectly clear close-up, with some other people. I recognized them even though I hadn't seen them in a long time and barely knew one of them, but it took me several minutes of studying and mind-changing before I decided the other person was me. That's what interests me in photography. The distance from reality that makes even your own face the face of a stranger.

It made me think- I like it. though I have never heard of the person who said it.
