I know... I haven't written in months. But since I am fairly unknown on this website I don' feel too bad.
Anyways, I felt like posting about music today because I feel so lucky to live in a world where there are so many different types of music that one can immerse themselves in. I am equally lucky that for most of my life I have maintained an open mind about the music that I listen to. I was very fortunate that in high school I made friends who introduced me to many new things in music that I hadn't really considered. Prior to knowing them I thought that music began in the 1990s and before that people were not capable of being creative. I know how sheltered that sounds but...
When I met them I got to know so many good bands and artists for example: U2, Kathleen Edwards, Sarah McLachlan, Robert Plant, Alison Krauss... there are so many I could list here, but I won't bore you with a huge list. This isn't to say that the diversity of my music taste was limited to their suggestions I happened to have a very diverse music taste on my own made up of artists from all over the world. But their guidance has helped me to open up even more.
Lately those same friends have introduced me to a whole new genre of music, which is Visual Kei (VK). I think there is still ongoing debate about what actually defines this genre. But the definition is least important to me. For me this genre is amazing as it encompasses so many different aspects that interest me. From the amazing clothes that the musicians wear sometimes, to their movements on stages, and especially their amazing musical talents. I still remember the very first VK pv that I watched, which was Rainbow by the band Alice Nine. Within the first few seconds I knew that I loved that band and would quickly become an avid fan of all that is Alice Nine. But my love for them isn't only found in my first few seconds of listening to/watching them. Their music often makes my heart soar and makes me want to dance and laugh and yes even cry sometimes. (UBER emo moment over ;p)Through this one experience and with the help of my friends I have been able to learn about other bands in this genre that I have grown to enjoy as well. I want to continue learning and listening to more from this genre because I believe there is a lot of talent there, and more music that will also elicit these emotions from me.
Okay so my rant has come to an end...maybe not yet, I LIED!!!!
A point I feel like I should make here to kind of sum up this fantastical rant is that we should never limit ourselves to certain genres of music simply because we are too scared or narrow minded to try new things. Let yourself become part of a global culture (music). It is one of the few things that connects people all throughout the world.
