Summary: Mikey wakes up with a headache, but his parents make him go to school anyway.
Prompt: headache/migraine
"Mikey!" the boy's mother called. "It's time to get up! You've got school!" Groaning, Mikey rolled over. He didn't want to get out of bed just to spend the whole day floating from classroom to classroom. Of course, his mother didn't care whether he wanted to or not. "Mikey!" she yelled again.
Sighing, Mikey sat up. "I'm up, okay!" He opened his eyes, rubbing at them with his hands to remove whatever gunk had accumulated there while he'd slept. He had to blink a few times to get adjusted to the light, and even then there was still a stabbing pain in his head, just behind his eyes. "Fuck," he grumbled.
Head pounding, Mikey got up out of bed and stumbled out of the room to get to the kitchen. He had to blink rapidly once he stepped into the brighter room. "Mom, I have a headache," he said miserably.
"Just take some medicine. You're not going to die," his mother told him as she flipped over some bacon in a pan on the stove.
Mikey sighed and sat down at the table next to Gerard. Of course he wouldn't be able to get out of going to school simply because he had a headache. Gerard reached over to rub Mikey's back. "You'll be okay."
"Yeah, right," Mikey grumbled.
He ate breakfast and downed a few tablets that were meant to make him feel better. They didn't.

Thankfully, Mikey talked Gerard into giving him a ride to school, so he didn't have to deal with the noisy, smelly bus, but he couldn't talk Gerard into just taking him to work with him so that he wouldn't have to deal with other people today. Gerard had laughed and said that the comic store was just as populated as high school and that their parents would kill him if he let Mikey skip a day of school, especially after they'd already put their foots down and told Mikey he had to go.
School was torture. Mrs. Humphrey's shrill voice grated on his ear drums even more than usual. Study hall, filled with chattering teens, was nearly unbearable. Walking through the hallways between classes made Mikey feel like his head might explode. Every time he passed by the nurse's office, he was tempted to go inside, but he knew his parents would only be angry if he did that, and there wasn't much the nurse would be able to do for him anyway.
Mikey didn't even try to brave the lunchroom. He hid in the library during the entire lunch period, and he desperately wanted to just spend the rest of the day curled up in between stacks of books, but the librarian was already giving him suspicious looks, and he really didn't want to get written up.
The bus ride home was just as horrible as Mikey had expected it to be. People shouted at each other and threw things and screamed for no apparent reason. Mikey hated riding the bus on any normal day, but on days like this, it was possibly the worst thing in the universe. Whose idea was it to put fifty kids inside a single vehicle with only one adult to manage all of them? Mikey would bet his savings that the sick bastard who invented school buses had never been forced to ride on one himself.

When Mikey got home, the house was empty. He downed some more of the headache-fighting tablets that didn't work, hoping that at least if they didn't make his headache go away, maybe he could overdose on them and then the pain would be over anyway. Mikey went back into his dark room, eager to feel the comfort of his soft bed after such a crappy day. He curled up in between the sheets, burying his face in his pillow. He felt better already.

Mikey woke up when he heard Gerard saying his name from the doorway. Gerard's voice was low, like he was worried about waking Mikey up. Mikey's head wasn't pounding quite so hard anymore, and he was thankful for it. "What is it?" Mikey mumbled.
"It's time for dinner," Gerard said. He shifted back and forth on his feet, like he was a bit nervous. "How are you feeling?"
Mikey shot him a little smile. "Better."
Gerard nodded. "Look, I'm sorry I didn't let you stay home today," he said, and it sounded like it really was.
"You didn't really have a say in it. You're not Mom and Dad," Mikey told him. Why should he blame Gerard for his bad day? It wasn't Gerard's fault he'd had a headache all day.
Biting his lip, Gerard nodded some more. "Listen, next time you need anything, just come to me," he told him.
Mikey sat up. "Gerard, you don't owe me."
Gerard shrugged. "Offer still stands. Come on, time for dinner." With that, he left the room, leaving Mikey alone in the dark. Mikey smiled to himself once Gerard was gone. He really loved his brother.
