The crazy and lovely barista

What's next? she thought. Cleaned the cups, wiped down the counter, reset the espresso machine. Ah, that's right, clear the checkers set at table three. But wait, another customer just walked in.

"Hi. Jane, right?" he said. She looked at him and said nothing. He smiled and chuckled to himself uncomfortably and ordered an espresso. She reached for a clean cup and went over to the machine. She turned back to the man and made change. He wanted a muffin as well. Great. He paid again and she made change. She took out a plate and grabbed a muffin while she reached back for the espresso cup.

"Ow! Hot!" she jerked back her hand but her finger to her mouth. The cup shouldn't be that hot, she thought. She tasted blood. She looked down and saw her skin was pierced slightly, a drop of blood ballooning up on her finger. She looked at the cup. There were two little eyes and a mouth on it, smiling at her.

She stood up straight and looked at the man at the counter, who was now confused. "Something wrong?" he asked. She shook her head no. She went to the machine, looked at the cup briefly. It had a... face. Eyes and mouth. It was following her around with her eyes. She put it aside carefully and made a new cup of espresso.

"Here," she said to the man. She stared at the cup and examined it as she handed it off. The man looked at the cup and back at her. She turned away. After putting a bandage on the cut, she placed a "Be Right Back! :)" sign on the counter. She took the cup to the back room.

It was made of ceramic for sure. But it had eyes and a mouth and it smiled at her as she paced back and forth looking at it. It looked kind of cute, she thought, until it smiled, revealing a set of teeth.

She leaned in. "H.. hello?" she said hesitantly.

"Hello," it said in a deep man's voice. She startled back. It talked. She reached for a large bowl and placed it over it slowly. "Hey! Hey, wait!" it said. She left the room.

She waited until the night shift came into replace her. She went in the back and wrapped the cup in a towel, put it in her bag and left quickly.

She shared an apartment with an acquaintance. She went into her room to examine the cup further.

"What are you?" she asked.

"I am Tim. I am a magic cup. Spirits of an ethereal, ephemeral, epic, whatever nature infused me into this ceramic receptacle. I am here to help you. To help you find... Mr Alexander Salvo." He seemed to be waiting for a reaction.

"Who is Alexander Salvo?" she asked.

"You don't know?" he asked. She shook her head no. "Alexander Salvo? A 29-year-old man who lives in San Francisco. He has in his possession the final portion of the Evil Book which name I dare not speak. The appendix is called The Seventh Index and can cause great harm to many people. You do not know this man?"

She shook her head gain. He looked concerned. He frowned. "Are you sure? Do you know an Alex?" She again shook her head. "Wait, who are you?" it asked. She said her name. Jane Windstream, a 27-year-old barista living in Brooklyn who listened to sad music and dressed in dark clothing. She painted pictures of frowning dogs in her free time.

"Toad warts!" he cursed. "You're not the right Jane Windstream! How could this be?"

"Who is ... like, the other Jane Windstream?"

"She is a 75-year-old conjurer and mystic, former witch and presently the third most powerful female to wield the dark matters for good."

"You thought I was that? I don't look 75."

"Yeah, I thought it was magic or something. You know, youth potion or something. And what's with that black lace? Of course I thought you're a witch. Arg! Blisters and warts!"

"Hey, I'm not a fucking goth."

To be continued...

To my brother: Ha, not quite what we talked about. But I'm still working on it!
