Talk about the pros and cons of tackling a canon muse versus an OC. Describe why you might favour one over the other. Also, if you choose a canon muse, how do you make yours stand out among all the others?
I think everything really depends on how much effort you are willing to put into a muse. If you want everything kind of spelled out for you, you can go for a canon muse but with an OC it's all dependent on you. It's up to you to give them a believable back story and a unique voice so they don't end up sounding like a carbon copy of someone else's muse.
I have both canon and OC muses and I like the freedom I get with an OC. Sometimes when a canon muse refuses to speak to me or current canon events kind of throw a monkey wrench into my story lines, I can kind of retreat to my OC were I don't have those problems. I also like that I'm not always trying to capture someone else's voice with an OC. Anyone who has ever seen at least one episode of Homicide and SVU knows that Munch is written very differently on each show and sometimes it's really hard to reconcile both parts of his personality into one muse. Also I like to write Munch more from a Homicide perspective and I always have to contend with the fear that people who have never seen Homicide won't understand him or think I've lost a grip on his voice. Then again I think that's what makes my Munch different from others. Someone else might decide to start writing Munch the point of view I use is what will separate mine from theirs.
